All true. But I stand behind the important part of my quote, the past you didn’t repeat, that the range of differences among all women and the range of differences among all men are much larger than the average difference between the average man and the average woman.

We could say exactly the same thing about strength, or lung capacity, or height and probably breast size.

Nonetheless, nobody would dispute that it is an established fact of physiology that men and women do not have the same strength, or the same height or the same lung capacity, or the same breast size.

So I can’t see that it adds very much to get all nitpicky when discussing farts.

I checked my copy of Wind Breaks: Coming To Terms With Flatulence, by Terry Bolin and Rosemary Stanton.

The book is light and aimed at a popular audience, but Dr. Boyle is a serious researcher in gastroenterology and cites his own research projects in the book. Dr. Stanton’s no slouch, either.

That whole quote has a lot of similarity to what I said, listing why differences would appear, even though I didn’t hunt down the book until after that earlier post. The conclusion also holds: Seven is much closer to twelve than three is to 32 or to 38.

Man, I break the rules, too. I’m a female… and I fart. Actually, I burp more than I fart. I think my gas goes out the wrong end. But I have been known to clear a room or two in my day.

My fiance is afraid of when I get pregnant… how terrible my farts will be…

I never think that citing actual research is nitpicky. I prefer it when people do.

Mythbusters actually did this. They tested the myth that “pretty girls don’t fart.” Even though Discovery allowed them to film the episode, they later refused to air it. You can however find it on youtube.

They didn’t show that in the US? In Australia it’s shown on a network which allows some really “out there” stuff to be broadcast, so the episode was seen here.

My issue with the show was that it relied on self-reporting during their “daily frequency” bit, so guess what? Kari reported the fewest and Adam reported the most. Still, the rest of the show was pretty good.
