With the exception of some downright dodgy goalkeeping the standard (and level of enjoyment) in the games has been pretty high, at least in the highlights i’ve seen.
The draw with Germany was a fantastic result for the England ladies as well.
Hope you get to play the USA. Hope Solo, the USA keeper, is quite the hottie. Actually, several of the USA women are not just good players, but quite attractive.
PS I should note that there is another thread around on this topic somewhere. Oops, nevermind, that one was about rugby.
I’d love to watch some of the games, but I’m not sure who in the States is even carrying them, never mind the inhuman hours at which they occur. Plus I don’t have cable or satellite TV or much of anything, really.
The England vs Argentina (6-1) game today was enjoyable. Some nice passing and footwork from the Argentinians, but some suicidal defending and (initially at least) shockingly bad goalkeeping. No wonder the England team resorted to pinging in long shots a fair few times.
Games are being carried on ESPN and maybe also ESPN2 in the USA. Most are at 5 and 8 am because of the time difference, but they show replays later on, and it’s not terribly likely you’ll have the score spoiled by a mainstream sports broadcast.
“Our top story tonight, England have vanquished Argentina in a recreation of the Falklands/Islas Malvinas war. In other sports news, Tiger Woods won something and there were some NFL and Baseball games, but who cares, really, this is the real football!” <-- Something you’re not likely to hear in this country.
USA goes up 1-0 on Nigeria in the first minute on a goal that deflects between the legs of a defender from about 4 meters out. Nigeria’s keeper was slightly wrong-footed on the deflection.
USA leads Nigeria 1-0
Sweden and North Korea are tied 1-1
If results hold, USA would play England in the next round and North Korea would play Germany, if I understand (and ESPN has it) correctly. Not sure if that also eliminates Sweden, who are traditionally a powerhouse. Still plenty of time for things to change.
USA holds on to beat Nigeria 1-0, Sweden rally to knock down North Korea 2-1. There are four groups, as best as I can tell only the top two in each group advance. So USA play England on Saturday, 8 am Eastern time, 1 pm London time. Germany and Sweden meet in the other quarterfinal.
Normal football threads are invariably to be found in Cafe Society (there’s one visible there now) but you launch this Womens Football topic in Mundane, Pointless Stuff etc. etc.
I believe North Korea moves on in spite of the loss, due to goal differential. I hate that, the first tiebreaker should always be head-to-head results.
I stand corrected. I wasn’t aware that Sweden had only tied Nigeria in the first game. Sucks to be them, one more goal (or one fewer from NK) and they would have advanced.
The US deserved the win over England. I wasn’t impressed. Can’t complain about the England team’s workrate, but the gap in skill was clearly visible. The US showed more measured footwork and individual skill, and exploited the gaps in space better too. Wambach looked good, Lopez looked a bit one-footed, but didn’t pick up on any individual performances beyond that.
Aluko seems to be the Heskey of the women’s side; I thought she put in a reasonable performance as a target man (well, woman), but while she has pace she doesn’t have acceleration (beaten over the first few yards a few times), and her finishing is non-existent.
Phillip was awful at right-back; no first touch, scattergun passing. Asante I didn’t even notice on the pitch. Why didn’t Yankey start for England? She may be another one whose finishing is less than brilliant, but she’s always impressed me as a creative player.
The only England players (for me) to come out with any credit were Faye White in defence and Jill Scott in midfield (although the latter’s bruisingly physical performance led me to wonder why she didn’t pick up a yellow). Until the second goal I thought Rachel Brown had a reasonable game too.
