Women's ovaries and chances of pregnancy

Say a woman is examind and found to have a large cyst on her ovary. Doctors operate to remove the ovary. The other ovary and fallopian tube is working fine. How much would this reduce the chances of her having a baby, if she was in her late 30s? What are the chances in general of a woman in her late 30s getting pregnant, compared to say a woman of 20?

Theoretically it would have no effect at all. One ovum is eleased each cycle. It doesn;t matter how many ovaries there are. If the other ovary is viable then there should be no effect.

The reproductive specialist my wife and I have been seeing said the same thing. She has had several cysts. So far, he has been able to remove the cysts without having to take the ovary. He has said several times that if he does have take the ovary, it doesn’t hurt her chances as long as she still has one good ovary.

I lost an ovary to a tumor when I was 22. I am now nearly 32. I was told that my one remaining would “fire” every month instead and that I had just as much chance to get pregnant as I did before. I did continue to have a period every month. I got pregnant when I was 28 and had an uneventful successful pregnancy. I had difficulty getting pregnant, but it was because I also have endometriosis and am prone to cervical dysplasia.
As far as the odds for a woman in her late 30s getting pregnant, I will have to find a cite for you. I know in general a woman of normal health has a 25% chance of getting pregnant in a given cycle, but I don’t know how that factors down with age.
