In the end, the final seemed easier than either of the previous two matches, and not just because of the score. How many times did the Dutch really threaten?
Some steps forward this world cup, but some steps back. What happened to the rest of the world aside from USA/Europe? Australia underperformed, Brazil is a shadow of their former self. Japan and China just didn’t have it. Are they all getting worse, or is Europe getting better? Anyone know how seriously people in England/France/Holland/Sweden are taking the women’s game these days?
See you all at the Olympics in about a year!
I don’t follow it closely, but my impression from media coverage is that women’s football in England is (rightly) getting a lot more attention and investment now compared with 4 years ago. I expect England to put up an even stronger challenge in 4 years’ time.
Agree with this. It’s been on a steady rise since a decent showing in the London Olympics compared to the men, but I think the real boost is the BBC - they’re clearly on a mission to promote womens sports, and have screened all the major games of this tournament on prime time BBC One - the most watched TV channel in the country. Which means even my ancient father has gotten into the tournament, and everyone is talking about it at work (more than the Cricket World Cup, which is currently being held in England, but is screened on pay-per-view channels).
Far be it for be to agree with Forbes, but I don’t think the women have a case for demanding more money.
Do WNBA players make as much as NBA players? Of course not. The men’s game simply generates more revenue.
This US team was definitely talented, but terrible representatives of the US. That bit with miming the sipping of tea against England was very unsportsmanlike and crass. Megan Rapinoe is about the most obnoxious athlete in any sport that I’ve ever seen. At least we get four years before we suffer through this lot again.
Rapinoe is 34 and likely wont be on the 2023 squad. A good portion of our best players are thirtiesh so neither will they. The issue is only about our two National Soccer teams and their players.
I don’t see anything in your linked article that quantifies the revenue disparity between the men’s and women’s game. If Forbes is incorrect, I’ll gladly change my opinion but nothing I’ve seen so far indicates equality in revenue.
Y’all are discussing two separate things. BobLibDem is taking about what the teams get from FIFA for its various World Cups and the revenue FIFA makes from worldwide distribution rights, while madsircool and TroutMan are talking about revenues and payments from US Soccer Federation.
Those are different payouts. The complaint is regarding USSF payments (mostly, though FIFA World Cup payouts get pulled in at times as well)… which is further complicated by the completely different payment structures (USWNT receives salaries & healthcare in addition to bonuses, while the USMNT receives only bonuses) and that the compensation is determined by CBA negotiations. The disentangling is fairly complicated.
If Trump was smart, he’d keep to his promises invite the USWNT. It’s one thing to dismiss local teams like the Golden State Warriors and Philadelphia Eagles, but most Americans despite what the big mouths wants you to believe love the Woman’s Team, and a disinvite I think will completely backfire on the President. I mean can you imagine the President of our country actually disinviting his/her National team that just won a World Cup from visiting the White House???
Better yet, he would do even better in his Tweets extending a special olive branch asking Megan Rapinoe to attend as well.
Three stars? Let Rapinoe know he would be willing to speak with her and any other members of the team that have an issue with him for 30 minutes after the ceremony.
HOME RUN! UNITER! If Megan declines, now she is on the back foot from a PR standpoint .
Sadly, I think 2 and 3 are beneath Donald’s ego level, sad to say.
Asked if he would ever play for the Yankees and Mets, he said:
What a gem! How about Lebron James’ ESPN special where he chose the city he would play in. Remember Tim Thomas, the Bruins goalie who wouldn’t meet with Obama because he wanted to make a statement about the size of government? Curt Schilling? From his wiki page:
