Indeed, that is what I was wondering when I saw the 82-0 score. That one you can actually witness on Youtube. Poor stadium announcer; while he’s trying to finish up announcing the goal scored and relevant stats, another goal is scored. He must have been talking straight for three periods.
So, what is the alternative to continuing to play the game? I guess the U. S. could have come down the field and intentionally kicked the ball out of bounds over and over and over again. How brutally condescending and embarrassing would that be?1 Face it, there is no up side to being horribly bad on the field of play. You can either be blown out or treated like a helpless invalid. As one coach commented after being asked about his reaction to being blown away, “We need to get a lot better.”
You can always play keep ball. You can take the ball to the corner flag (that’s the usual equivalent in soccer to kneel-down plays in American football). You can change up how you attack, so that things that have been working less well are what you practice. There are numerous ways to play out the 90 min. so you aren’t attacking aggressively. And scoring in stoppage time. And celebrating it like it was something important.
The Women’s National Team was making a point, and it had nothing to do with the game, or with the Women’s World Cup. And they lost my respect in the process.
Just catching up with the highlights of Japan-Scotland. Anyone else think the Japanese player cheated to win the penalty and should be punished retrospectively? Is there a mechanism for that in this tournament? Also, Scotland’s penalty shout was absolutely nailed on. Scotland seriously unlucky by the looks of it.
Not sure on the retro cards, but agree on all other counts- the sport gets all these possible new fans who watch only during the WC, and are probably then turned off and don’t return because of the diving, (cheating).
Go England!
Some great goalkeeping for a change, from the English and Argentine GKs.
Indeed, was particularly impressed with the Argentinian keeper. OK, it wasn’t the best-struck penalty, but the save wouldn’t have been out of place in a mens’ game. Thought England had a fair shout for an immediate second penalty with the shove in the back of the player following up, which caused them to shoot wide. But not given.
Argentina played a very physical game but England just got on with it, rode it out, and finally took their chance well. But as the commentators said, they will need to improve on that if they want to contend in the final stages of the event. I think they have scope to do so.
That is very nice of you… Thanks!
I was going to ignore this and move on but then you added this.
Well, most people would refer to her as my child rather than a relative… but whatever. You called me a know nothing, claimed she played for a small club in a regional league instead of the top national league she played for, and played for a commuter college instead of playing for the Big East. BTY IUPUI and Purdue are in different conferences so don’t play each other (but yes, I do know girls who have played for both teams). You claimed my knowledge was limited to Indiana club soccer. when all of our games were played out of state or against out of state teams.
My point is you insulted my daughter and my level of knowledge. If you have raised a child who played at this level you would know that you basically live and breath the sport for 20 years or so. I believe I have spent many more hours watching and discussing women’s soccer with top level coaches, current and past pro players, and a famous sportscaster than you have.
So, what is your cred? (oh wait, you won’t read this nor respond) I’ll close the door on my way out.
Leave it Spud, she ain’t worth it. She’s a bit new fan, if you know what I mean
I agree with your interpretation of both penalty decisions (although that’s no excuse - we were pish for most of that game yet again) There’s no mechanism to deal with in-game stuff like that, and there probably shouldn’t be. Best to leave that sort of post-facto thing for stuff that would trouble actual courts

Dream Team vs Cuba. Final score 136-57. Final basket by the US scored as time ran out. For some reaction from both sides, see: https://theundefeated.com/features/the-day-the-dream-team-dismantled-cuba-1992-olympics/
You were going to let it go, buy your pride and ego wouldnt let you, you mean.
I was going to ignore this as I said but then my astronaut/model son told me I should reply.
first of all, wow! How clueless can you be, to point out all the inconsistencies in my comments on Indiana soccer, meticulously and one by one, as though they were out of ignorance and not apathy?
All I did was see you were in Central Indiana and named all the area soccer clubs I had heard of! You thought I was insulting your child by saying she played for the Bloomington Cutters, I know fuckall about Bloomington Cutters other than they are a soccer club in Indiana, I honestly could not tell you if they were boy or girl or what age- or care!!:rolleyes:
What is my cred? What cred do you need specifically to be able to have an opinion on class, and whether it necessary to score a 13th goal in stoppage time?
Half of me thinks you are having a laugh at me, with this - if so, brilliant!
But if you are legit, the psychoanalyst in me knows there is a one in a billion chance you will not be able to resist defending yourself, again to a stranger on the web, and you have my word I will let that be the last word- plus, you are dying for someone else to ask you who the famous broadcaster your pals with is, so I will go ahead and do so now!
Fun trivia: Prior to 2019, the most recent goal scored in a World Cup by a team up 3+ goals in stoppage time was in the 2018 Russia-Saudi Arabia game, where Aleksandr Golovin scored in the 94th minute to put Russia up 5-0. Aside from that goal, when was the last time it happened in a men’s or women’s World Cup?
Answer:In the 91st minute of that same game, when Denis Cheryshev scored to put Russia up 4-0.
Looking at the results so far, I’m guessing that the third-place teams that won’t advance to the playoffs will be from groups A and F. That would put 1A (France) against 3C (Brazil (!) would be my guess, but maybe Australia or Italy), 1B (Germany) against 3D (Argentina – revenge for Renate Lingor scoring in stoppage time to put Germany up 11-0 in 2007?), 1C (Italy, I guess?) against 3B (China), and 1D (England) against 3E (either New Zealand or Cameroon; I’m leaning toward the former). As I see it at this moment, I think I’d rather be 1F (Spain, France, England, Germany) than 2F (Canada, Germany, Netherlands, France).
Not one person here has said anything close to a 4th or 5th stoppage time goal would have been inappropriate, that number is well within the range of rational possible gd.
You may be conflating that with my comment that teams in league play are content to pass out a 3 goal lead in stoppage time, even though gd has a slight chance of coming into play there. No harm, good trivia.
Oh man, I can not imagine what that would be like. I ran the scoreboard for a few years for a high school team in soccer and even in a normal game it was difficult to juggle using the binoculars to be sure you saw the correct player who scored and who assisted, asking others in the box if they agreed, looking at the sheet to match the number with the name and then trying to figure out how to pronounce Kobiashakowi all while trying to make sure you recorded the goal, shots, shots on goal, and figure out who just subbed in and who went out.
I think I may have a new theme for nightmares after seeing that clip.
Just one simple piece of evidence you have to show that you have a clue what you are talking about other than you watch TV.
I’m a genius. You should go all in with all of you realizing many of us are laughing at you.
Well you win this one. And it is a one in a Trillion chance that I won’t defend my kids.
That would be great!!
To be fair, there’s a shot clock in basketball. There is no such requirement to make a scoring attempt in soccer.
It is now being suggested that women’s soccer should have smaller goals.
The American team gained possession of the ball with less than five seconds left. Their drive to score their final two points was impressive and obviously not demanded by the shot clock.
What part of “I’m going to leave this discussion and let you have the last word” do you not understand?
