Women's world cup 2019

Great job, Mr. O’Reilly!

On topic, I thought England had a tougher time than necessary against a much lower-ranked Argentina. I don’t know how they’ll make it through the first elimination round against presumably much better teams.

USA plays again tomorrow at noon (EDT), I think. Go USA! Just stop at 12 this time, and no scoring in stoppage time, you naughty ladies!

Helmut Doork, personal insults are not permitted on this board, in any forum other than the BBQ Pit. This is a clear personal insult towards RitterSport and Spud, and so I am giving you a formal Warning.

Meanwhile, reading through the rest of this interaction, while your other posts haven’t quite contained any personal insults, they’ve all been rather toxic. You are being officially directed to not post any more in this thread. Likewise, everyone else is directed to drop the topic of whether athletes try hard for an entire game.

I have also been directed to Baron Greenback’s post #129, but so far as I am able to determine, “new fan” is not an insult, so I am not taking any action there.

I had never heard of this before but the logic they used seems to me to be extremely flawed. They are going on average size of the players. The keeper is never average size on a women’s team.

In woman’s soccer you may find a forward or attacking mid who is around 5’0" or so, but they are fast and have great field awareness. Factoring this into the average will skew things quite a bit. I have no stats to back it up but I would guess there are very few men’s players under 5’8" or so.

If we want to make a change to women’s soccer I’d much rather have them focus on the turf. Women play often on artificial turf which is much more likely to cause injury than natural turf. Men all play at on meticulously groomed natural turf which is much more forgiving.

Women’s keepers are larger than the average women’s player, sure, but they’re much smaller than the average men’s keeper. The 3 keeps on the USWNT roster are all 5’9". The Gold Cup roster for the men has 2 6’4" keepers and 1 6’3" keeper. The shortest male keeper I can think of is Nick Rimando and he’s 5’10".

I’d like to see the women play on grass more too, but their attendance is generally lower, and smaller fields are more likely to have turf vs grass. Mandating grass would require playing in less geographically diverse cities or renting out stadiums you can’t fill. I’m ok with either.

I agree that men tend to be larger than women… not misogyny, but biology. I just don’t see a reason to reduce the goal size. If women’s soccer has a higher average score than men’s then that is just the difference in the games.

I think as we see women’s soccer gain popularity worldwide we will hopefully see more equality in the playing conditions, pay, and attendance. Maybe not but I can hope.

For what it’s worth, that is what happens with youth football: smaller pitches, smaller goals and sometimes fewer players. Also often mentioned in being instrumental in developing technical players; I’ve seen people argue that having kids play on full size pitches, is one of the reasons England struggles to produce technical players (compared to spain and the Netherlands).

Watching some of the wc games does give the same impression as watching 13 year olds on a full pitch (far more so then the U20 mens match I just looked at for a bit).

Whether this will change when women’s football continues to improve, is something we will know when it does. But at the moment the general quality is very low…

In the US kids start out playing 6v6 on a small field with small goals. They then progress to 8v8 and at around u13 move to the full 11v11 on a full size field.

Another thing that is very popular here for the younger teams are 3v3 tournaments. I think these are really good in developing the young kid’s skills. These are outside of the normal season and allow the kids to focus on basic skills without being overwhelmed.

Apparently the USA team is traveling in a bus prominently emblazoned with the USA flag, and marking them as the World Cup team. Which is a big security flaw.

yeah- as I CLEARLY stated, shot clock off. Was it off? if not, what the DT did 30 years ago would be the exception that proves the rule.

just saw this- understood

Is this unique to the US team, or are all teams travelling in wrapped busses?

It is fairly common in NCAA to have a bus that is a rolling billboard for the team. But I guess the terrorism threat is lower in Illinois.

I would have thought that a representative team from the land of the free and the home of the brave would be OK with this. Do you want them to borrow the Canadian bus, maybe?

The US is really rotating their squad. Makes sense, Chile is even lower rated than Thailand and the earlier Sweden game means that they’re unlikely to be concerned with goal differential.

USA should have 2 goals 3 minutes in. Going to be a long day for Chile.

I like this USA lineup. Very dynamic and energetic.

The Chilean keeper is soooo much better than the Thai keeper. Both in shot stopping and with the ball at her feet.

I mean if you just swap keepers this game is at least 7-0 right now.

The Chilean keeper is very impressive. She is singlehandedly responsible for keeping the damage to a minimum for Chile.

I’m so pissed. The US Chile game was going to be the first I could watch in it’s entirety and I got an emergency call after the second goal. Not a serious emergency but required me to drive for an hour and a half so I missed the rest of the game.

And we see that the whole bit about we had to score a ton against Thailand to ensure we had the advantage over Sweden was nonsense. Sweden 5 - 1 Thailand. The US now has a 10 goal advantage in the GD.

Good game against Chile today. Hard to see how the US will be stopped short of gold.
