Women's World Cup 2023

The Spain-Sweden game was quite good. All the goals nicely struck. The Swedish goal after a nice header pass, but Spain recouped the lead within a minute after a defensive error on a corner kick left a player open at the edge of the box. The womens game is getting better every year, but goal scoring headers seem much rarer when they play. Spain passes so well they will be hard to beat. The Matilda-Lioness game should be good too. Too early to watch live but am taping it.

England’s play on the ball very good so far, but off the ball not so good. Several rash challenges so far and will be racking up some cards if not careful.

The commentary on the BBC is ever so slightly ahead of the picture and it is just enough to be annoying.

And BOOM great strike, 1 0 England.

That’s been coming

Christ, what a towering response goal!

Wow! Fantastic goal by Kerr!

Superb from Kerr. England will be kicking themselves though, they had a 3 on 3 attack and instead of taking a chance and trying a through ball, they went backwards and then lost the ball, leading to Kerr’s wonder strike.

Sam Kerr, you beauty!!
C’mon Aussie!

Oh dear! Shambolic defending by the Aussies.

Hemp, 2 1 England. Terrible defending by Oz.
Reminiscent of Lineker vs West Germany in 1990, that one.

Exactly what I thought too!

Lauren Hemp does a Maradona assist to Caniggia AKA Russo… sensational

Being at work, I listened on the radio and just tuned in to video for replays of the goals, but I think it’s fair to say this is first KO game England have properly deserved to win? Yes Australia had some good chances too but overall it seems to be me England were mostly in control, and of course clinical in front of goal - three excellent finishes.

I hope James plays some part in the final, what a player to be able to bring back in, not only rested but raring to go and eager to atone.

I saw the whole game (and the two before), and that’s absolutely a correct assessment. Totally deserved win. The Aussies IMHO already gave it away with their passive play in the first half.

When the strategy is winning with less possession it’s quite important not to be coming from behind almost the whole game.

Better team wins convincingly.
Well played.

I only watched the highlights, but I think either one of these teams would have smoked Team USA with the current roster and coaching.

I’ve watched a good portion of this year’s Cup, including almost all of the knockout round. IMO the two best teams are in the finals, and it should be a good game.

A great rivalry, too, ever since England defeated a heavily-favored Spanish side in 1588.

So let’s hope the weather helps again on Sunday…

Good game. The women are getting very adept at passing in the midfield. There were a few excellent shots on goals, some exciting rushes including a beautifully timed pass by Hemp to Russo, and three solid headers in the penalty area. England just played a little better, more physically (with many more fouls and a stupid yellow at the end for using an extra ball), shot better corners and were just a bit faster. The Aussies are a great team. I’m not sure England can beat Spain, but of course it could go either way.
