Women's World Cup 2023

I was watching the Colombia/South Korea match. There was a penalty kick, and the South Korean keeper came off the line early. The kick was successful, though, so I guess they have no reason to call it when the kick is good.

But I’m still looking for it.

Holy crap! PHI 1 - NZL 0. A historic event for sure. Next up is Norway.

Yes, of course it’s only called if the keeper stops the ball, or else the other team would be punished for an infraction of the opponent.

I saw part of the England-Haiti match. England was awarded a penalty which Haiti stopped. After review, they ruled that the Haitian keeper had left the line early. England scored on a retaken penalty.

That’s what started the conversation, at about post #50. Every goalkeeper used to do this. I’m curious if the referees were being a bit unfair to the Haitian keeper by making a call that they overlook 99% of the time.

So I’m watching the penalty kicks now to see how often the keeper comes off the line early. I want to know if the refs are calling it consistently.

ETA: Does anyone else find the text and graphics for this World Cup to be particularly ugly and/or confusing?

By the skin of their teeth. New Zealand had a brilliant pass, and the shot hit the post. Then they had a goal disallowed for a very close offsides. And a great save by the Philippines keeper.

Still, good for them.

And I read that last week and must have forgotten about it. My brain is going to mush.

They will definitely check every penalty. It’s become routine in the Permier League with VAR.

So I haven’t watched any of the games yet. I can see replays via Peacock and I’m trying to figure out which one(s) to watch. Can anyone suggest an exciting match replay without giving any spoilers?

I starting watching USA vs. Vietnam but I knew the result and I knew it wasn’t so competitive so I took a guess and switched to NED vs POR. I’m almost at halftime but it doesn’t seem that great. Any suggestions of a different replay? Thanks.

Canada v. Ireland was quite good.

Thank you. I shall give it a looksee.

Pick your raincoat and umbrella, or else you’ll get wet from watching it.

And yes, I recommend it too because it was one of the rare close games in this WC so far.

England vs Haiti is also quite a good match.

USA vs Netherlands in about 4 hours will be the first clash of heavyweights… and definitely a bellwether for whether the USA should be viewed as a tournament favorite.

Just horrendous defending, especially by Sullivan, on that goal. 0-1 Netherlands.

USA looking a bit better thus far in the second half, but no real good chances yet.

Now that was a beautiful goal!

I’ll take the corner when they look like they have few ideas from the run of play. Game is really opening up though. Could be a fun last 25.

Creating some from the run of play now. Mostly playing pretty vertical. Rodman and Smith both look a little rough with their touches, but fast and strong.

Interesting game. Not super convincing from the US I don’t think. A lot of chances were created from corners and hoofing the ball down the field. The Dutch played a more controlled game although obviously didn’t win it for them either.

I would guess the Dutch are slightly favored to win the group? Which would likely set the US against #3 Sweden, which isn’t what they want on the first knock out game. Of course still need to win the final game too.

Sigh…the Dutch came so close
