I was watching the Colombia/South Korea match. There was a penalty kick, and the South Korean keeper came off the line early. The kick was successful, though, so I guess they have no reason to call it when the kick is good.
I saw part of the England-Haiti match. England was awarded a penalty which Haiti stopped. After review, they ruled that the Haitian keeper had left the line early. England scored on a retaken penalty.
That’s what started the conversation, at about post #50. Every goalkeeper used to do this. I’m curious if the referees were being a bit unfair to the Haitian keeper by making a call that they overlook 99% of the time.
So I’m watching the penalty kicks now to see how often the keeper comes off the line early. I want to know if the refs are calling it consistently.
ETA: Does anyone else find the text and graphics for this World Cup to be particularly ugly and/or confusing?
By the skin of their teeth. New Zealand had a brilliant pass, and the shot hit the post. Then they had a goal disallowed for a very close offsides. And a great save by the Philippines keeper.
So I haven’t watched any of the games yet. I can see replays via Peacock and I’m trying to figure out which one(s) to watch. Can anyone suggest an exciting match replay without giving any spoilers?
I starting watching USA vs. Vietnam but I knew the result and I knew it wasn’t so competitive so I took a guess and switched to NED vs POR. I’m almost at halftime but it doesn’t seem that great. Any suggestions of a different replay? Thanks.
USA vs Netherlands in about 4 hours will be the first clash of heavyweights… and definitely a bellwether for whether the USA should be viewed as a tournament favorite.
Creating some from the run of play now. Mostly playing pretty vertical. Rodman and Smith both look a little rough with their touches, but fast and strong.
Interesting game. Not super convincing from the US I don’t think. A lot of chances were created from corners and hoofing the ball down the field. The Dutch played a more controlled game although obviously didn’t win it for them either.
I would guess the Dutch are slightly favored to win the group? Which would likely set the US against #3 Sweden, which isn’t what they want on the first knock out game. Of course still need to win the final game too.
