I haven’t seen these in stores, but my grandparents have tons of them. Left overs from the 70’s, I’d imagine.

I don’t have any closets 
They’re not exactly metal cascading hangers, they’re metal hangers with a soft, slightly clingy fuzzy layer on the outside and these little metal-inside-fuzzy-outside hooks of a sort that goes over the “neck” of one hanger and you can hang another hanger off it. They’re not ideal - when you root through the closet, sometimes the swinging of the clothes pulls lower hangers off their higher supports - but they’re pretty good.
Got 'em at Target, and lately they’ve been on a clearance endcap, so they might be discontinuing them.
I just looked online: they’re called Huggable Hangers. Here are the hooks. They also offer clipsthat you can put on any of the hangers to turn it into a pants/skirt hanger, which is nice. I love modular systems!
(Yes, I’m kind of a closet organization system junkie. I foolishly keep thinking they’re going to keep my stuff neat and tidy when the real root of the problem is that I don’t do my laundry. Sadly, even the best hangers don’t load themselves!)
I can totally id with you but I’ve now gone the other way. I am so on top of the laundry it’s become neurotic!
I get some spam for them once in a while, but haven’t bothered to try them, since as a single male I have a ridiculous amount of closet space available to me.
