You’re asking for consistency from a comic book story? Nobody really has a consistent story on how the Amazons age. There have been many versions of the story already, so they can use any of a number of excuses for the weird aging. The comic book has a convoluted origin too:
I meant in Batman v Superman neither one of them had heard of her when she showed up. Sorry if I didn’t make that clear.
The soldiers were coming after Diana who was princess, golden child and divinely created god-weapon of the Amazons. It’s not unsurprising that they’d shoot first and ask questions later. Perhaps if they just saw the soldiers come onto an empty beach they would have acted with less aggressive haste.
Regarding the clothing thing. I think the point was made about Diana’s skimpy fighting costume when they tried to put modern clothing on her. Think back to the try-on montage – everything they put on her, she had to test to see if she could fight and kick in it. She knew she’d need full range of motion and women’s clothing at that time was super constrictive. I thought back to my own experience with pole fitness when people would ask me, “Why do you have to do that in a bikini?” Well, because I need a lot of skin exposed because for a lot of the moves, I am only holding on to the pole by friction & surface tension: I need my skin touching the pole! I immediately related that to Diana’s try-on montage. “Can I do this in this skirt?” Nope. Better try something else.
I did, however, have a minor nitpick with the wedge heels. Really? Now wedge heels would be the best choice for fighting if you’re going to wear heels at all, but back on her island, they all wore flat gladiator sandals.
There was a brief humorous scene in London in which Diana handed her shield and sword to Etta Candy, who then struggled with how to deal with them. My first thought was, “Didn’t Diana have a scabbard for the sword (and perhaps a strap for the shield)?” My second thought was whether she would hand over such valuable tools to someone she had only just met. (And Etta didn’t even keep up with them, so as far as Diana knew, they could have been stolen from Etta.)
I don’t think she had a scabbard. As displayed in the tower it didn’t have one and she just grabbed them and scooted. She seemed to keep is slung bare on her back. Here’s an image but I don’t imagine there’s a lot of good images of her back available yet.
Aside from it’s “Godslayer” moniker being a load of hooey, they also told Diana that it could only be wielded by a special person. But Etta pointed it threateningly at the Bad Guy in the alley if I’m remembering. Although I chalk that up more to “Amazon General was full of lying”. In fact, I’m not sure if the sword had any special properties at all. The shield at least seems bullet resistant like the bracers.
Ah HA! Here’s an image showing it bare on her back. I guess she just had some sort of strap with a loop.
It’s a bit amusing that Chief procures the Fit-For-A-German-Officer car and Sameer does his A-Thousand-Pardons-I-Misplaced-The-Invitation-Pray-Do-Not-Hit-Me schtick, and the combo gets handsome Steve Trevor in place to chat up Doctor Poison – and then right when she’s maybe going to confide in him as hoped, the whole thing falls apart because Diana walks into the room.
That said, as badass as WW’s stride across No Man’s Land starts off, she soon gets slowed down and eventually all she can do is stand still while deflecting a ton of incoming fire; what happens to her, at that point, if the Merry Band doesn’t then suddenly get into the headshots-against-the-distracted business?
np they were’nt - they weren’t even aware of the island or Diana at that point - they were after Trever - they did not start shooting first, but started as a response due to the amazon’s releasing a lot of flaming arrows in their general direction before they landed.
Yes, but Diana was with Trevor. So the Queen and General saw Diana & Trevor on the beach with boatloads of men coming after him (and her). Rather than wait and see if the twenty armed men were friendly towards the princess or not, they fired.
The only bit of info the Amazons had to go on was Steve Trevor telling Diana “those are the bad guys”. Diana seemed to implicitly (preternaturally?) trust Steve. So if Trevor’s words were good enough for Diana, maybe they were good enough for the Amazon leadership – Diana’s immediate kin.
Also, the Amazons aren’t exactly peaceniks, are they? I wonder if they are somewhat morally ambiguous at times in the comics?
Beyond all that, we’re forced to wave hands and apply Comic Book Logic to the situation Maybe the Amazons have enough divinity within them to be able to gain information about the world around them (or else, the immediate situation around them) through supernatural means  So … perhaps they just knew what was up with the Germans aiming to land on their island.
Your original quote stated that the army was coming after Diana - while that may have been what the rest of the amazons assumed - they (the army) were after Trevor ‘and nothing else’ at that point.
Which - unless I missed a scene - only Diana knew what Steve said at that point.
Therefore - the Amazons started the skirmish on the beach - not the Germans.
not that it truly matters - the Amazons had been preparing for an attack for, what, centuries?of course they assumed this was that attack and responded in kind.
Apparently the Women in Charge weren’t really interested in waiting to see how that played out. Yeah, I originally said “Diana” because that’s how the WiC would have seen it. Call it Steve who happened to be 24" from Diana; don’t matter to me.
More Comic Book Logic: if Diana knows something (especially something ‘in the moment’ at the front of her mind) and Hippolyta, etc., walk up to Diana … do the other Amazons then supernaturally learn that same something? Maybe a certain look in Diana’s eyes was enough to convey enough information given a little divine assist?
Alternatively: the film-maker probably assumed that the audience would largely be comfortable mentally treating the Germans as enemies from the get-go, even without explicit explanatory exposition. Accordingly, the collective audience would be expected to not even really consider that the Amazons shot first. I admit to not considering that as a moral issue at all.
Wait twenty-odd years for the remastered special edition and they’ll make sure that the Germans shoot first.
Something else occurs to me – it draws from the post-Crisis history of Themyscira in the comics and not from the recent film, but maybe it is illustrative of the Amazon’s general mindset and perpetual state of readiness:
Now, the movie did make plain that Ares (and any minions thereof) was a well-established enemy to the Amazons – and that he was expected to return and fight the Amazons again. What was somewhat less clear in the film – while at the same time not a great leap in logic – was that perhaps any men coming ashore** at Thermyscira would be assumed to be agents of Ares intent on doing harm to the Amazons. The post-Crisis information (quoted above) from the comics would seem to bolster that possible interpretation.
** keep in mind that Steve Trevor was brought ashore by Diana – she witnessed his plane going into the sea and her actions led Steve to the island. Steve Trevor did not come as an invader (not that the Amazons were thrilled to see him).
They did a great job showing that the Amazons were real warriors. The training montage wasn’t just a cheesecake show like every other portrayal of Amazons that I’ve ever seen. Those women could kick some serious ass.
And I have to add: Gal Gadot in glasses? SCHWING!
So… WW is to the Greek gods what Thor is the the Norse gods? Where are all the Greek gods now in this universe?
Ares killed them all -
Heh. When you put it like that, what’s the final showdown in this movie?
A warrior god – the son of the king of the gods – zaps her with his magic lightning; and she’s all, yeah, that’s impressive; but, when you get right down to it, in effect it’s just one more attack for me to bounce back at a guy with my bracelets.
So it’s DAWN OF DAWN OF JUSTICE: WONDER WOMAN VS THOR!
