So I’m looking through the recent additions on the Kaleidoscope Schemes site. None are really striking my fancy until I see a scheme claiming to be authored by one Wonko the Sane.
So I download this scheme and load it on my Mac.
…and my world turns upside down.
Literally.
Herr Wonko appears convinced that the GUI designers at Apple have been woefully misguided for the past fifteen+ years. See, he thinks that putting the title bar on the bottom of the window, and putting all the window buttons in the lower-right corner is a Good Idea.
I tried navigating with this scheme. Really I did. But when I found myself turning my head upside down in order to navigate (not to mention almost getting busted by my boss because I didn’t know where to go to quickly close the Window of Innappropriate Content), well, I guess I just can’t adjust my brain that completely.
Okay, all seriousness aside, Wonko, kudos to you for designing a working Kaleidoscope scheme. Color me impressed. (And I will give you this - I do like how teh title bars of windows docked at the bottom of the screen just seem to be hanging there.)
I haven’t given myself the time to learn how to design one of my own, but maybe one of these days when I magically have nothing else to do…
For all you Mac users, if you want to customize the look of your desktop (and you’re not running OS X), Kaleidoscope is the greatest for it. Thousands of schemes available to choose from on the website. It’s cheap shareware, too.
For all you PC users, well… just stand there in the back and try not to look too jealous.
And here I was, thinking Wonko had inexplicably hauled off and popped you one on the snoot.
Doesn’t sound like something he’d do, frankly. I’ve met him, and he seemed like a nice guy. Quiet. Kept to himself. Liked fuzzy animals… I guess appearances can be decieving.
What?! You mean there’s more than one of you out there?!
OK, hang on… Someone once told me this internet thingie is useful for doing research. 'scuse me a minit.
…
(some time later) Huh. Turns out some guy named Douglas Adams named a character in one of his books after you. Guess somebody else must have “borrowed” the name of this character for his identity as a scheme author.
Right, well I’m off to give this fellow a stern thrashing for making me look like a complete chowdah-head. By God, I’ll teach him that, when it comes to making ME look foolish, I don’t need ANYbody’s help!
I think Wonko is a crazy Mac user in disguise. Maybe he just pretends to be running windows. Ok, maybe not, but I’m working on him. He will be mine… oh yes He will be mine.
Hey tygr, thanks for the new toy. I hadn’t seen kaleidoscope before but figured something like that existed.
For the record, I must say that the impostor’s sceme doesn’t look like windows, thank God. And it’s acually not all that interesting. Our true and great Wonko would have done much better.
And don’t forget to put a new soundset on your Mac. Most of the ones on that site are more interesting than the stock “Platinum” soundset that comes with the OS.
This page has a soundset made up entirely of sound bites from Looney Tunes cartoons. It’s called “Carl Stalling”, and it’s a load of fun. Especially at work.
Hey, at the last New England Dopefest I managed to clip Wonko with one of his own kites… I knocked his glasses off of his face but managed to not injure him.
I see that next time more extreme measures are necessary.
Tgry, I’m going with the antique for now, but I will play. Thanks.
andygirl, I have to meet you. I keep hearing fabulous things about you and you are always so funny. Wonko would love us to meet. Let me know if you come down to NJ.
In other news… I thinkI scare Wonko right out of the thread, eh?
Thanks, Corn_Flakes, for clearing that up at last…
andygirl: I’m so grateful to you for stepping in… I’ve been thinking the cops wouldn’t be able to put this sordid business to rest fully. Now that I know you’ll be taking care of this, I’ll finally be able to sleep at night.
“Probe” all you want, Wonko! Yer getting yours, and soon!
