Villanova just ended UConn’s 70-game winning streak with a 52-48 win in the Big East final. Not the best looking game, but quite an exciting ending. What a huge win for my alma mater.
Wow! GO VILLANOVA!
Saaa-WEEEETTT!
Go Duke!
(and my sister is a 'Nova grad!)

‘Bout fudgin’ time.
Speaking as a diehard UCONN fan… I’m almost relieved that they lost. This stupid streak has gotten so much attention and put so much pressure on the team (not to mention a target on their backs). A loss now is better then a loss late in the tournament.
If UCONN does win the tourny, it will be this loss that allowed them to do it. No way they would have had a chance with the added pressure of the streak. It was amazing they lasted as long as they did.
Maybe I’m just putting a positive spin on this cause I don’t want to be crushed, but I think this could be a blessing in disguise…
You have a bad username for a UConn fan there, SuperNova.
I think that to a certain extent you’re right about the streak being over as a good thing. I’m sure, though, that UConn would have preferred to have lost earlier in the season rather than in the Big East championship. The end of nine straight Big East titles is probably harder to take than the end of the 70-game win streak.
Hey, I’m a 2000 Nova grad too (though I finished my degree 17 years after I started at Temple).
Anybody see the press conference afterwards? I thought the coach did a great job of keeping it in perspective, and shoving those crap questions up the reporter’s ass (pardon my freedom). While I’m an ND fan, it’s just great to see attention given to women’s collegiate sports - attention that UConn and 'Nova certainly earned.
Watched the latter half of the game, and while I am glad that UConn lost (as a Vols fan), a couple of thoughts afterwards:
-
Villanova plays ugly ball. Very effective but ugly. I certainly won’t argue against it because it is important for a team to play to their strengths, which Villanova is clearly doing. But, this game didn’t exactly have the flow that one would associate with a classic.

I’m not so sure this loss is a good thing for UConn. I think an overreliance on freshmen will hurt them in the end. The loss takes away the aura of invulnerability. I still think they lose in the final 8 to a team like K-State.
