Maybe it was as much a financial decision not to publish as it was a moral one. Maybe a secondary factor was Hachette not wanting to lose money on a book few people would buy.
Woody Allen makes a lot more money, playing the clarinet a lot worse, than many struggling musicians out there. And yet people go to listen to him not because they like his clarinet playing, but because he’s Woody Allen.
Though the scumbag thing is worse.
Why would few people buy it? His movies and his relatively few books have usually attracted mass audiences and critical acclaim, along with the usual detractors. I’m sure that Hachette did a careful profit/loss projection. What caused the cancellation was the revolt among the staffers, which I’m sure figured in the calculations (the potential of a general strike is not exactly profitable for any company).

How much of that article did you actually read? Merely getting as far the subheadline would have informed you that the publisher’s statement was that “Allen is not Roman Polanski”. My whole point in the two threads in which these things are being discussed is that there are some among us who are unable to make such distinctions. I would expect as much from someone who is unable to distinguish a good film from a shitty one.
