"Wordle," a strangely compelling word game (Part 1)

TRACE
TEASE
I usually use the same first word. After I got the answer I checked the list of words and TEASE is the only word that fits.

Today was a good day.

Okay, the Wordle variants are ruining my sleep. As in, okay, I can stay up 'til midnight to solve them right away.

But neither Dordle and Sedecordle have adjusted for daylight savings! I just can’t hack waiting up till 1 a.m. :frowning:

Hah!

IRATE

I’d say I’m getting good at this but as soon as I feel confident, a word comes along that kicks my butt. But this one I did torque out from the known available letters after my first try.

Lucky that I pulled it off in four. Picked an atypical starter:

I’d seen TRACE touted as an ideal starting word here and elsewhere. Guess I picked a good day to finally try it.

PESTO → I think there’s still one more vowel in there, but the only nonplural word I can think of using T, S & E uses two…

I should have tried harder after my second guess. I think i had enough information.

My brain wants there to be a rule that letters can only appear once in a word. Wordle disagrees.

I really struggled with that, too. I’m finally getting over it.

For reasons I can’t imagine, sometimes when I paste the above from the site I have to delete spaces in between the rows, and other times I don’t. ? Anyway: today was blessedly fast even if not impressive numerically:

ALIEN
STEAM
BEAST
TEASE

Here’s tomorrow’s. This easily could’ve been worse.

I’m glad that’s not a rule, nor indicated with any special coloring. The game is already pretty simple and easy as it is, so any additional challenge is welcomed by me. Mastermind worked the same way. Lingo operated the same way. Just wait until a word like EERIE shows up (if it hasn’t already.)

One thing that may help (though it did give you additional information) is that plurals aren’t in the answer set, so far as we know. I have the list of at least the original words on my computer, but I have not looked to see whether that was the case for sure (and the NYTimes may have changed the word set, for all I know.)

Thanks, i’ll see if i can remember that !

Eh.

Today’s Byrdle was an absolute bastard though.

It was worse for me, but not as bad as it could’ve been.

They have changed very little. A small number of words have been removed for being either inappropriate or too obscure.

Update: New York Times version

The game moved to the New York Times on February 10 2022. Six words were removed from the solution list, so you’ll need to look ahead in the answer list for the current word. That means starting July 20 2022, you need to look six words ahead for the actual word.
