"Wordle," a strangely compelling word game (Part 1)

@SunUp had already ruled out one of those two words you suggested, and using the other one would have put them even closer to the solution than the word they did choose. Are there any other words that had not been ruled out by that point?

I think it’s only luck when you happen to guess the solution before you’ve ruled out other possible words that fit.

Yes: PRINK

I’m doing better at my initial guesses which is helping me not run through all possible guesses before maybe getting it. Was close to having this one in three, but didn’t.

What’s a better opening gambit, to maximize vowels or consonants? STAMP or PEONY?

I was using STERN, and then was using RATIO. Lately I’ve been using IRATE.

Pure skill, of course.

For me, today it was 50-50 whether I’d get it in 3. I guessed wrong (but remember, I don’t play hard mode. I think had I gone hard mode, I would have actually gotten it in 3, ironically.)

I went:

ADIEU
STROP
DRILL
DRINK

Had I gone hard mode, I most likely would have played:

ADIEU
THINK
DRINK

Actually, wait, since I had two tiles on the first one, I would have to play both those in my second guess, right? Then I may very well have gotten it in two. So far, no twos for me; just 3s and 4s. My strategy basically means I’ll never get a two unless I’m completely lucky, as I rigidly play the first two guesses and only start making educated ones on the third, as mentioned before.

Got it in 3, with only correctly placed letters. I am a god (with lots of luck).

OK, but there must be an answer, I’d think. Maybe this thread isn’t the right place to find it? I vacillate between heavy on the vowels and heavy on the consonants on the first two tries. You can get all six vowels in two tries, but is that what you want?

If you go for 8 consonants, you’ve still guessed 1/3 of the vowels, and now you’ve probably guessed almost half of the consonants in the language, or probably more than half based on frequency. I’m thinking consonants is the way to go, with S, M, T, R, N, L, C, D, H, G, and P being your best choices.

So SMART coupled with CLING, CHAMP followed by STERN (assuming you get shut out on all five of your first guesses) should give you material to work with right out of the box. Of course if you hit something with your first try, then you can’t use the second ploy at all.

6/6 today, but I got it. I blame a hangover from last night’s game and a lack of coffee…

I felt very efficient this morning.

This will be interesting!

It is a good question — what’s the better gambit, to maximize vowels, or to maximize consonants? Maybe it is better to nail down the consonants.

I approach it a little differently, and this strategy might guarantee that I always get the word, regardless of double letters (or even triple!). I go by
what letters are most frequently used? For that I got this answer:

E A R I O
T N S L C
U D P M H
G B F Y W
K V X Z J Q

I got this from lexico.com —they determined the frequency of letters used in English vocabulary, regardless of word frequency, here:

Imgur: The magic of the Internet
(You’ll have to click this to see it)

Early on, for my initial words I was using TREND, then later STERN, and then later TEARS followed by BISON. Then I started using IRATE followed by LOCUS.

And then continuing from that, what initial words use those frequent letters while minimizing repeated letters?

With IRATE and LOCUS, there are no repeated letters, and I’ve now used 10 of the 11 most frequently used letters (leaving only N).

Continuing, my next words can then be:

H Y M E N (1 repeat, D P G B F W K V X Z remain)
and
G A P E D (3 repeats, B F W K V X Z J Q remain)

Those appear to be decent starting words to use without taking into account the feedback given by the game. Taking into account that feedback of yellow and green letters, I can choose to pivot at any time and guess the word.

So far since I started on Christmas Eve I am 100%, 19 for 19, and have never missed the word.

I may continue with this strategy and see if I can keep it going.

I cheated and did tomorrow’s, and my guess was right – there was a 50-50 chance, though (well, actually a bit better than that with my logic) . I realized there was another word that seemed to fit the pattern of final guesses, and the spelling differences in Engilsh. I’ll spoiler the thought process tomorrow. But if anyone wants to have a go with the extra challenge, it’s doable.

Got today’s word in 2.

Told my sister about this game yesterday. She was able to play more than one game. Looking into it I noticed she was getting ads, then noticed her game was titled something other than Worlde although it played exactly the same. Turned out she had downloaded the app right next to Wordle in the Apple store. She deleted the ad infested game, concerned with what else it might be doing to her phone.

With what Josh Wardle said about apps and notifications, I didn’t bother looking for any app. I’ve been using his site. But I looked on the Apple app store and wow, there are a few Wordle apps.

I’ll just keep using his site, though.
