It is a good question — what’s the better gambit, to maximize vowels, or to maximize consonants? Maybe it is better to nail down the consonants.
I approach it a little differently, and this strategy might guarantee that I always get the word, regardless of double letters (or even triple!). I go by
what letters are most frequently used? For that I got this answer:
E A R I O
T N S L C
U D P M H
G B F Y W
K V X Z J Q
I got this from lexico.com —they determined the frequency of letters used in English vocabulary, regardless of word frequency, here:
Imgur: The magic of the Internet
(You’ll have to click this to see it)
Early on, for my initial words I was using TREND, then later STERN, and then later TEARS followed by BISON. Then I started using IRATE followed by LOCUS.
And then continuing from that, what initial words use those frequent letters while minimizing repeated letters?
With IRATE and LOCUS, there are no repeated letters, and I’ve now used 10 of the 11 most frequently used letters (leaving only N).
Continuing, my next words can then be:
H Y M E N (1 repeat, D P G B F W K V X Z remain)
and
G A P E D (3 repeats, B F W K V X Z J Q remain)
Those appear to be decent starting words to use without taking into account the feedback given by the game. Taking into account that feedback of yellow and green letters, I can choose to pivot at any time and guess the word.
So far since I started on Christmas Eve I am 100%, 19 for 19, and have never missed the word.
I may continue with this strategy and see if I can keep it going.
