I ran afoul of my unfortunate tendency to eliminate possibilities if the pronunciation I use differs from that of the word itself. To wit: I was running down ‘words that end with RON’ by going through the alphabet systematically, including “I _ RON”, “U _ RON”, and “A _ RON” with all non-eliminated letters put in place of the space. When I got to P I mentally pronounced the A as “ah” instead of as a long A, and so dismissed it as a possibility, until going over it again. (Thereby making a 5-minute game into a 15-minute game!)
TMI quite possibly, but: there it is.
I fall into a similar trap, @Sherrerd, where different pronunciations hide from me. It’s particularly bad when running through the alphabet checking every letter for a single blank, just like you describe.
Yeah. It’s not the biggest deal in the world, but I do hate that face-palm ‘gee I’m an idiot’ feeling I get after one of those!

Even though I saw blown first, I feel good about not guessing it because on second look I started seeing a bunch of possibilities: blown, flown, glory, flour; at that point I stopped looking and resigned myself to a full research guess for 2, just like my strategy dictates. Since I had already seen two F words the choice was obvious.
