I honestly thought I was about to lose my streak. My brain somehow simply could not see the TCH combination. I was sure there had to be two U’s, and after CUTUP I was completely lost at sea. So I stepped away for a bit and after a few minutes came the “Duh!” moment. I was left with HUTCH or BUTCH, and the former seemed more likely. Phew, indeed. Too close for comfort.

After my first two guesses eliminated most vowels and the most likely consonants, it took some brain-wracking to figure out what could be constructed with what was left. I nearly spent my third guess just on an elimination guess until I finally thought of a candidate.

After the first two, I was convinced it was one of the many _ITCH possibilities, and my third try was to reduce that thicket. But it set me straight by rejecting my expected vowel, and then all became clear.

Well that was quick. Pilot is one of my standard second words, along with store* and metal, depending on how the first word goes. I think pilot all by itself narrowed it down to pinto as the only possible answer.
