After EARTH, I had the xAxTx. So, could be TASTY FACTS NASTY PASTY PANTY SALTY. To eliminate T Y F C N S P L I could play SPLIT or FANCY.
After SPLIT, I had the P. So, could be PANTY or PATTY.
I’m happy with the 4.

Figured I was looking at either the _ATCH trap or the _ATTY trap.
I was down to PATTY, BATTY, and FATTY, so I wasn’t worried about a fail, but the right guess got me the par. Could have been much worse.
UNFIT → About what I expected from that start.
TEARS → Is there an O in there? Can’t make one fit. It’s a little early for a repeat letter, but I’ll give it a try…
PATTY
Lucky guess! F, R and a third T were already gone, but B, C and (maybe) M were also options.
I checked the list and found there were five choices. The first letter of my second word eliminated a couple that you mentioned.
The five words were: DATUM, GAMUT, BATTY, FATTY and PATTY. (and FATTY and BATTY may be skipped because they are insults. Fatty acid is okay. Calling someone a fatty is not.

PATTY
After the first two words, I had the A,P, and T, but didn’t have any of them located. So there are about 30 ways you can arrange the three amongst the five spots, after taking away the positions they aren’t allowed to be in.
That’s a lot of ways! Not many to write down (I’m a combinatorist, stuff like this is up my alley), but a lot to go through and see which available letters could make sense in the remaining blanks of those 30 possibilities. Really way more than I was going to do in this case.
But even with those I looked at semi-closely, I had PATTY, TOPAZ, and TAPED as possibilities. I was torn, because the first one was the one I liked the best, but if I guessed it and was wrong, it wouldn’t help me choose between the other two.
And there were potentially more possibilities that PATTY wouldn’t help eliminate. So brave Sir Robin bravely ran away with his third guess, and chose a word that couldn’t be the solution, but would narrow it down as much as possible for guess #4. Anyway, it did the job.
Tomorrow’s is a perfectly serviceable four.

Guessing clung before cling was an unforced error. I had been so focused on clink for the i guess, but clerk had eliminated that. So I started looking at u’s, saw clung, and immediately entered it. I realized my error before the third letter even revealed itself.
