Sometimes you’re the windshield, sometimes you’re the bug. Coulda been a three, a four, or a five. I’ve been on the lucky end of these before, so I guess it all evens out.

Been a couple months at least since the last time I scored a 2. After my first guess (and a fair bit of work) I had 11 possibilities for the solution, and the one I went with for my second guess was simply the best choice to narrow down the possibilities and all but guarantee a 3. Happy to get lucky and get a 2 instead!
It was a fun exercise: after my first guess, I had L_N. The middle letter had to be a vowel, and I’d only eliminated A. But eliminating A was enough to figure out that the first letter wasn’t a vowel. So I had four possibilities for vowels in the middle, a cluster of possible consonants for the first letter, and a different cluster of consonants plus silent E for the last letter. Playing around got me my 11 suspects, and I did a little matrix grouping them by first and last letters, and indicating their middle vowels. No matter which letters of CLING came up duds, I was going to be well positioned for guess #3. Instead, everything turned green.
Tomorrow’s gets a three. I’ll take that, with gratitude.

There should be _ blanks before and after what’s in the spoiler box, but Discourse disappeared them. And of course I didn’t notice that in the right hand screen because they were in a blurred-out spoiler. I have no idea why it disappeared them, or how to keep Discourse from doing that. But if anyone was trying to follow my blurred comment, I’m sure it made it a good deal more confusing.

Nothing from guess 1; for guess 2 I wanted to try an S start, maybe with L? and then I, O, or U? “I” came first so that’s what I tried, giving me quite a lot of information, as it happened.

PATTY → Not unexpected. At least two vowels are gone, though one of 'em is uncommon.
SHONE → For a lot of common letters, only getting one hit seems rough. N in 4th… ING ending?
RUING → Yes, and I’m out of vowels. Two Is would be ICING, an L in second would match BLING, FLING and CLING, so…
CLING
BLING was too slangy to try anyway, as “IMING” would have been.
