"Wordle," a strangely compelling word game (Part 1)

Wasn’t sure I was going to get this one.

After guess 2 I didn’t know it was “_ASTE,” but thought I should try one of those words next. CASTE was ruled out by guess 2 and I didn’t think of HASTE; that left me with BASTE, PASTE, TASTE, and WASTE. I couldn’t think of a test word that used any three of B, P, T, W----so I decided to just try what I figured was the most common-in-English of the four words to confirm whether or not this actually was a “_ASTE” trap. And got lucky.

Twerp is probably in the guess list. My first thought was Tebow but that’s a name, not a word.

Tomorrow’s Wordle, Today
Finally, some recognition.

I’ve been trying different words than I usually do for my first three guesses, but it hasn’t been paying off. Haute was probably a wasted guess as I wasn’t sure it’d be a word, but it gave me the U and T to check (I didn’t go with Saute as that’s already been an answer word). And then I saw I had three choices of words (taste, baste, and waste), but only two more guesses. Yikes. I came up with a word (brows) that would show me which of the three it’d be, and Waste it was. At least it wasn’t a fail!

Not my finest effort. Would have really helped if I had checked M to start. After 2 I could see reset, remit, beret, and for some reason I thought ferret was spelled with one R. If I had realized, I would have guessed brims at 3. Either way, that gave me all five letters, three of them green.

Not that it matters, but I got today’s in two guesses. It’s been a while since I got lucky.

Wordle 429 4/6

This one was genuinely fun. I came up with a new starting word that I didn’t even think was a word, and it gave me enough info that on each subsequent guess, I thought I had a real shot at the solution, and AFAICT had it narrowed down to a single possibility by my fourth try.

SLART
DRIFT
RIGHT
MERIT

  1. What’s the deal with my new first word? Is it really a word? It’s not in my dictionary, but Google says it is, and provides a definition. My motivation was that while I’ve been using SLANT for months, it lacks R which is by far the most common consonant in Wordle solutions. So I tried SLART (ibartfast) just for the hell of it, and much to my surprise, it was accepted. Who knew?
  1. From there, it was a question of whether the R was in the first, second, or third spot. I thought second was most likely, because of all the consonant combinations with R as the second letter. So I went with that, then tried R as the first letter (thought for sure I was RIGHT on my third try, but RIGHT was wrong  ), and only lastly tried it in the third slot.

Yes I teed it up quite nicely for you. Anyway, I dropped another deuce today.

Well, that’s an interesting pattern. I don’t think I’ve ever had five blues (yellows) before. I assumed it was going to be a _I_ER word, and I was waffling between LINER and TIMER. Glad I went with the latter!

That’s one reason I doubt I’ll ever play the hard version: there’s no escape from a trap like that, other than guessing which of several possible solutions is the right one.
