After step 3 I could think of only two words to fit the “E_R” pattern (with several letters disallowed): JEWRY and WEARY. I was 100% certain it wouldn’t be the first one, and the second was disallowed due to the A…but I wanted to know if my guess that Y had to be the last letter was correct, and so went forward.
After what seemed forever I finally saw LEERY. What a slog!

This one had me sweating bullets a bit. I had a list of 6 words it could be after my 2nd word. I could have done a sleuth word, but couldn’t really come up with a good one with the letters I needed to check (V, Q, L, M, U, and second E). I chose to just try my chances and got lucky!

For some reason I just forgot about A. I struggled coming up with a second word using all the other vowels, but all of them seem to end with an E. Finally I saw chasm and just punched it in without realizing there were more A possibilities. (Also clash, but chasm eliminated that.)
It would only partially test the second E, but punching those letters into an anagram solver returned velum. Not the paper; that has two L’s. Apparently the one L version has a long E sound and means the soft palate, or other membranous structures similar to it.
