Got real lucky on my 3rd work which instantly solved the puzzle. And while I don’t strictly play in “hard mode”, I typically do unless I am not getting letters.

The BR on two was fortunate; I was strictly looking for vowels there. I still chose wrong on three, but this could have been much tougher than it turned out to be.
I played this way up till now. But twice in the last several days I’ve tried words that were already answers. It irritates me, because if I had remembered, I wouldn’t have tried the word.
Every day there are more words that are “has-beens” that could have been the answer otherwise. My approach to playing is rigid and so not remembering has a decided downward push on my stats. (Which probably don’t matter anymore anyway, since it’s going to be a long time before I exceed my last streak!)
Anyway, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking with it.

Coffee’s still hot. (Old fashioned manual pour-over cone with a reusable stainless steel filter, with freshly ground whole beans from a roaster I’ve been ordering from since… well, a really effin’ long time.)
Holy … something or other. Second day in a row this has happened.

Nah, you don’t need any excuses. We’re all playing the game however we want to, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
ADMIT → OK. Guess I get to try my recent go-to second word…
SHIRE → That paid off well! With a central vowel, maybe it’s the only one… but I should check
RUINS → OSIER would almost fit, but the E does it in. So it must be ?RIS?, and no terminal H or T. Two ?RISK possibilities, but only one ?RISP, so try
FRISK → Ah, well.

If I had thought like @RTFirefly I coulda had a 4.
Again, we were very close but your second word, which was the same as mine but with an S, was the better choice. You bested me today! I also again finish before my coffee was ready. Takes about 5 minutes for the water to boil (I grind the beans by hand as I’m waiting while also doing Wordle - I’m quite the multitasker ), then another 4 minutes in the French press.

Word ending “IS_” and the blank cannot be a T or an H…going through the alphabet…“ISC” maybe, but “ISK” is closer to standard English (i.e. not being a borrow-word from French or such). “ISP” is another good possibility.
Try “ISK”…brisk; frisk—try BRISK to narrow things down…
So cool.
