BLEAK Bleak indeed. E must be first. L is probably last. E - - AL. Oh yeah!

ECLAT
EQUAL
Not my best effort. After finding A and E, I gave up on the idea of a third vowel, and Q is always a blind spot. ECLAT is a very unlikely answer, but I know it from crossword puzzles, and it did (finally!) get the E and L into place. The L got to visit all five spots today! More of a struggle than it should have been.
IONIC → A not unexpected strikeout. Next!
TRADE → Should have gone TASER or STARE here, to get the S into play. Since I was so fixed on the S, I felt like I had to repeat the A in the 3rd spot to play…
LEASH → …which at least got me the L, so that’s good.
GLEAM → E must be in first, L in third or last… E?LA?, but I’ve already tried E & T, so ECLAT is out. E??AL, and I haven’t tried the U yet, so…
EQUAL
I feel kinda happy with the five, as the Q made that one a little tricky. Perhaps I should increase priority of guessing U to spot possible Q-puzzles in the future?

VIOLA
LEAFY

VIOLA was a throwaway guess as it doesn’t contain an E; I wanted to check the remaining vowels…except U, of course, which turned out to matter quite a lot. A long time between guesses 3 and 4–hundreds of words would have fit if not for the eliminated ‘already have been winners’ and ‘contain excluded letters’ words.

I struggled to place that E and L, but after my 3rd word, they could only be first and last, so an easy solve from there as it could only be one word with that A in green too.

Once I worked out that there is no possible word with a space between ‘O’ and ‘R’ with all other vowels eliminated (at least that I know of), it could only be a double ‘O’ – and then the two consonants immediately threw themselves at me.
Even WordleBot was impressed. (Not really.)
