SPADE → Try common consonants… and just for the heck of it, a double E to affix the E in place…
STEER → Good luck by hitting the T! Now, I can’t think of any words STE?? with two ending consonants (remaining: e.g. STERN) … so with a vowel: STE[EA] are out, but there is one word I can think of with STEI…

After my 2nd word, I had four choices I could see (Plein, Stein, Skein, and Elfin), and I went with the smart play going with one of the S words. But then I went with the K instead of the more common T, which wasn’t the smart play, but I just took a gamble. I’m fine with getting it in 4 though.

Yikes. After my first guess I hyper-focused on STI__, seeing still, stilt, stint and sting. Boy did I feel silly when neither S nor T were in the first two positions. At that point the trap had sprung.

Kicking myself a little on this one. I wanted to try both I and E at two, but after a minute of not thinking of a word with both those vowels ending in T, I moved on.
If I’d had a few sips of coffee and gave it some more thought, I would have seen EXIST (for my second two in a row) or HEIST (for a three). Instead, I settled for a pedestrian four, which is fine, but I know I should have done better.

After 2 I saw girly, but didn’t love that as a wordle answer. Burly seemed much more likely, but alas. Fortunately it locked the U in position two, which pretty strongly implied QU to start. The only vowel left was i so QUI, plus the yellow r made QUIR and boom, easy 4.

I feel good about this 4 after yesterday’s embarrassing 6.
