I might have tried PINTO had it not already been a solution. As it was, this came fairly quickly.
I’ve done that (more than once).

Wordle didn’t let me get away with substituting N for M this time. (I did get away with substituting I for A, at least.)

ALOUD → O in the middle. Only vowel? Gotta at least try some more…
STORE → Also a T. Where should it go?
BOOTY → Second O must be first or last. O?OT?.. don’t see much there. ??OTO - there’s one word…

It did take me a mighty long time to figure out that one word.

CRANE - Looks like REA. Most words that I saw had D and/or T. Both beginning and end.
TOWED - It’ starts with D,

No “greens” until the very end. And a bit of luck to get this four. Could have been TREAD, DREAD, TREAT, FREAK, WREAK, SMEAR, DREAR, SPEAR, SWEAR, or EXTRA (plus a few very unlikely obscure words). I’ll take it.

After step 3 (when it was clear it was a word with ‘REA’ in the middle as there was no place else for the A to go), I saw five possibilities: BREAD, DREAD, DREAM, FREAK, and WREAK.
I needed to test B, D, F, K, M, and W. And could NOT think of a five-letter word to test three of those; so I decided to just try one of the possibles (one with a D or a K). And got lucky (even if it’s just a par).
