Man, was I sweating this one. It took so long to place those vowels that I was forced to do a research word at five, always a risky proposition. I was very fortunate that CADGE eliminated most of the possibilities, and even more fortunate that it wasn’t BRAKE, which, like @EllisDee, I completely missed. Phew indeed.
Because there are quite a few _RA_E words, perhaps? Besides the solution, there were DRAKE, DRAPE, GRAPE, GRAVE, and GRAZE, and previous solutions FRAME, GRADE, and BRAKE, the last one of which for some reason I didn’t check against the list before I tried it. (And that’s given the consonants eliminated by my first two words.) Either way, it’s quite the trap. I’m feeling lucky to have gotten it in 5.
ETA: At the moment, 5 is both the mean and the median number of tries it’s taken those of us in this thread.

WordleBot sneered that there were 15 other possibilities after my first try, so obviously it was only luck. I agree!

Trap! Trap! Got it in par, but took twenty minutes due to having to make a ‘possibles’ list and then calculate which test word would eliminate the most options. Luck was definitely involved.
There were a LOT of possibles once that “_RA_E” showed up. Yeesh.

I totally forgot to check the previous answer word list…Brake and Trace both were already words. I don’t always do that…never for my start word, and rarely for my 2nd word, but it sure helps when there’s a big trap going on. Oh well…I will gladly take the 4 on this one.

Very similar to Aspenglow, don’t hate me because I have no idea how I got it so quickly especially after a streak of 4s and 5s. The word just appeared in a flash.
WordleBot says I was very lucky, 91/99, and that there were 10 other possible words left. I’m not sure why it has my skill score at just 80/99
