I found today’s one tough as well, getting it in 6. (1/22/22).

ADIEU-- my standard starting word let me know that I and E are in the puzzle.
BOLTS – but O is not. I and E are the only vowels.
NICER – tried putting the I in a different place, and found its correct placement.
PIECE – I struggled before putting this one down. Of course, I knew there couldn’t be two E’s, but I did find proper placements for the C and the E.
MINCE – After this one I realized that N is correct, so the only other word it could have been was…

This really got the wheels whirring in my head. Odds were against the I at either end, so put it in second. With an I, I couldn’t think of any words that end in CT, so CE or CY were it. Thought a long time before I came up with

MINCE

I winced when I realized I had had a shot in 2.

In my defense, it looks like many of us had this exact sequence for the last two guesses.

Yes, there can.

I mean, there aren’t in this case. But the same letter sometimes occurs more than once in the correct word.

That strategy detailed in the fivethirtyeight.com article is not possible to use in hard mode. So I guess that disproves my earlier assertion that using hard mode will tend to result in better scores, at least when you have a “God’s algorithm” set up.

My stats graph is currently perfectly symmetric, 0, 2, 13, 13, 2, 0.
