Too hasty with my second word…once again played a letter (R) not valid - also was already a used word, forgot to check. But got lucky with my 3rd word by playing the F, and only one choice from there. I’ll take it!
As a side note…that’s three double-letter words in a row, so maybe we’re done for a while now with that (one can only hope 
).

Almost went with another research word at 3 but with only three choices left I decided to stick with hard mode rules. Didn’t help that the best research word I could come up with was agita. G and K are tough letters to fit in a single word.
EDIT: My head cannon is that stave is not in the answer list.

After three I was in a trap but had eliminated all except STAKE, STAGE, STAVE, and STATE. I needed a word with at least two of the letters and either a double T or T in fourth if that was one of the letters. I eliminated two on my fourth guess and it came down to 50/50 and I guessed right.

Rather than using my usual third guess of NYMPH, i decided to try to guess right away. SLATE showed that the word was STA_E. My guess of GIVEN covered STAGE and STAVE. A blank would have meant STAKE.
APPLE → Not a whole lot of help, but more than I could expect with that start. Another vowel, and a T?
FLOAT → Good guess! If A is the middle, we might have an Office Space word…
FLAIR → Close, but no cigar. Only other word I can put together uses a repeat letter, so…
