Long-time reader, first-time poster (in this thread, I mean.^_^) I first played January 29 (game #224), and a few days after that started reading this thread, wondering if there’d be answers to some of my questions:
- Do answers ever take the form of a plural ending in ‘s’? (The answer seems to be ‘no’ so far.)
- Are double letters ever present in an answer? (YES!)
- Are certain types of words barred from being answers? (As has been discussed, ‘racy’ or particularly violent words do seem to be barred, as are words not used in English.)
Etc. One of my main questions doesn’t appear to have been explicitly discussed here: are answers ever repeated? But it’s strongly implied that they are not, from the information that Wordle will end on a certain date (10-20-2027) because the word list is 2,315-words long.
Given that words aren’t repeated, I did find a list of all the answers so far and do consult it before making guesses. I don’t know if this is considered ‘cheating’ or not but it does seem sensible not to guess something that’s been the answer on any previous day.
I play as though in Hard Mode though I haven’t turned Hard Mode on.
One other weird fact I’ll share: I ‘lost’ a day somewhere between February 13 and February 14—the system told me I was 16 for 16 on both days, even though I hadn’t reloaded anything or cleared cookies or anything else that would interfere with the statistics. (No site change, either: all along I’ve gotten to the site by Searching ‘wordle’ and just click on the official site, pre-NYT and post.) (I’m at 100% with 34 for 34, though my average probably isn’t very impressive. I’ll have to figure it out one of these days.)
Only one person posting here mentioned losing a day. So whatever it was, it wasn’t a widespread phenomenon.
Okay, I played several hours ago and saved the “share” info to Word, so here’s an experiment to see if it shows up as colored blocks when I paste it here—it shows up as tiny blocks, some with question marks in them, when I save it to Word:

Though none of the final answers are going to be plural-s, you can guess one if you’re trying to eliminate letters. The guessing is checked against a more comprehensive dictionary than the final answers list.

After my third pick I did my Excel/Word trick to find all possible combination of remaining/known letters and spell check the list and came up with five possible words. I picked the one that would give the best information if it was wrong. It turned out to be the correct answer.

I knew “thine” was a low probability but it had high letter potential. There were several other words I thought of right away that would have worked before “BRINE” but I picked brine because it was more common than the other potentials I skipped over (QUINE, OVINE, KOINE)
QUINE, OVINE, and KOINE aren’t common words. Did you get those from some list?

No, I was simply looking at the remaining letters and trying to think of words that fit. Those were words I came up with but discarded them as being uncommon before I thought of the right word.
