I wouldn’t classify this as luck. “Proper” play offers two choices for your second word: stole and stone. I think you get a 3 with either of them.
Luck would be if you went off the reservation and guessed something like cycle at 2, lucking into the y to save a 3.
You’re right. I play in a somewhat methodical way. Depending on the results from my opening word, I try the most likely vowel(s) next based on letter placement, along with common consonants besides ‘R’ and ‘T’. Included in those are S, C, L, P and N. (A favorite second word if I only hit an ‘A’ is SCALP.)
But I still could have gone awry with trying a word like ETUDE, THYME or THOSE.
My greatest vulnerability comes from those damn trap words, like SURLY.
