Managed to pull out a par after a rocky start. SHRUB and SHRUG were still on the table, so I can’t say there was no luck involved. I saw SCRUB the instant S_RU_ came up and didn’t pause to think about any other possibilities. But it was a case where any of the three words, if wrong, would have eliminated one of the other two. So being smarter wouldn’t have helped me here.

I saw scrum first but discarded it as not a valid answer because I was thinking it was exclusively a rugby term. I consider this to have balanced out when I didn’t go with my first instinct a few days ago and ended up with a four.
