LOTUS
LOCUS
I had both Lotus and Locus as options, and really felt the latter would not be used. I am certainly familiar with it (specifically in terms of genetics), but there haven’t been that many science or math terms. That said, I can’t complain about getting it in 3.
Are you thinking Locust? That’s a cricket.
Edit to add: oops, actually, it’s a grasshopper

LORIS

And WordleBot sneered at my 2nd guess as not being in the accepted list of words. But if TAPIR was a valid solution, why not LORIS?

I used WHELP to eliminate the WEDGE/HEDGE/LEDGE problem. DELVE was another possibility.
LEAFY → Let’s keep the vowel run going and add in another couple common consonants. It’s plural, but what the heck…
LIONS → And it ends in S. Interesting. Too hard to think right now of LO??S or L??OS with non-plural, so I’ll just try another plural with a U as well…
LOUTS → Not LOTUS, so it must be…
LOCUS
If I had thought of LOTUS before LOUTS, I might have thought a little more and gotten the answer in 3… but not at night after a long hike.

Yeah, I can get on board calling it bullshit. When covey was the answer I did a search of the entire SDMB for covey to see if anyone ever used it in a sentence. I found one instance, and then like a dozen instances of it appearing but being a typo. Pretty sure the word they were going for was cover, but now I can’t remember. Could also have been covet.
I’d bet that a similar search of locus would also find it being used in a natural language sentence extremely rarely.

LOCUS → Huh, three answers in a row starting with L, thus two puzzles in a row where I start with one green. OK, try more vowels…
LAIRD → E and Y are left. And that D must be 3rd or 4th (or both)… LEDDY? LENDY? Nah. Two Es? LEED? or LEDE?, but nothing comes from them… or…
LEDGE
Tougher than it looked; the second guess forced the answer, but it took a while to think of it. Scoredle said I should have tried LATER as my second guess, but I don’t think I’d have finished in 3 if I had.
