When there are just two possibilities after your first word, and one of them has already been used, it makes for an extremely easy 2. I’ll take it!

Story time: Years ago, I was taking the dog out late at night, just in the yard. I heard an animal rustling around nearby, and getting closer. I had one of those giant maglite flashlights with me, the kind that is big enough and heavy enough to be a legitimate weapon. My dog wasn’t large, and it was very old at the time; mostly blind and half deaf. So I’m thinking I might have to defend my dog here. Is it a deer that we can just ignore? A possum, that might lunge at the dog? A raccoon? God forbid a coyote? I’ve never in my life seen a bear here, but my neighbor has, but it didn’t sound that big. I’m thinking raccoon or possum. My adrenaline starting to flow, tightening my grip on the flashlight, and then I see it: SKUNK!!! Run away! Damn near dragged the dog back into the house immediately.
I was ready to bleed for that dog, but no fucking way am I fighting a skunk. Oh hell no.

This was a fun 3. After getting those two greens with my starting word, I came up with a list of 15 possibles. Four of them had already been used, and I downgraded a couple to ‘dubious’ and came up with a decent sleuth word that would get me a 3 in all but a couple of cases. Fortunately, the solution wasn’t one of those, but even that would have just meant a possible 4. ![]()
