SPEND → Alas, it must be a U. Something has to go after that N, K or G are best shots. SPUNK and SLUNK are out, so SKUNK is all that’s left for a terminal K, and though it’s time for a repeat letter I also need to try

I couldn’t catch a break on this one. My gut really wanted that Q. My gut was wrong; despite placing the S, that was pretty much a wasted guess.
Then, after stumbling onto the NK ending, I just couldn’t find that second letter.
Didn’t even realize SLUNK was still in play, so I suppose it could have been worse.

Seemed like not a great start with all of those blanks, but there were only so many letters to go 2nd, and there had to be a U, which gave me just 4-5 words. And I got lucky with guessing the right one! 
I’d have run like the dickens too! We don’t have skunks here in my area, but I can’t imagine trying to get that stink out of one’s dog, much less on me.

Saw the possibilities Ellis didn’t (there was also UNLIT, but that had been used already) so I had a mental coin toss for the 2, and I chose the wrong one. Too bad I couldn’t just score a 2.5 and not have to guess!

SKUNK → Picking up the K, and knowing there’s only one, is kinda cool. Plus, KN really looks like a prefix - I gotta try it. Be nice to get two vowel guesses in too
