After 2 I of course immediately saw knell, but figured there was zero chance now with an editor overseeing answers that they would put knelt and knell back to back. Kept looking, and in a throwback I almost got stuck on incel again, but then quickly saw uncle from there.

After my opening word, the solution was the first possibility that occured to me. But then I thought of MELON, LONER, LUNCH, and I also realized that there were a lot of possibilities out there that I wasn’t seeing. (Roughly 2 dozen legit possibilities in Scoredle’s list of 98, as it turned out.)
So I decided to go with my regular second word, which narrowed it down to the solution. I continue to be happy with my first two words.
