PIQUE → OK, not unexpected. Try an A & some comcons
SLATE → Now what? R & N still out there, along with O. But fitting all those into a word with an L and trailing E? Fugettaboutit. I actually punted on the question with
CYCLE → which at least placed the L. Since I still needed to try O, I went with
WHOLE → and, not thinking of something with a leading O, went back to the R & N and finally saw
NOBLE
Scoredle says I had ten more words to try; most of 'em had high B.S. ratings (OOZLE? ZOLLE? really?) so I consider it a moderately skillful five.

After my first word, I saw Anise, Ashen, Aspen, Mason, Pansy. Aspen seemed like a good shot at the 2, and would identify which of the others it was. I was feeling pretty smart until afterwards when Scoredle showed me I’d overlooked Basin. But as the song* goes, “It’s smarter to be lucky than it’s lucky to be smart.”
You too, huh? Good thing, you would have trusted the B.
