MEANT
Yeesh, glad it wasn’t that. I wasn’t thinking that at all.
Since my starting word starts with S instead of P but is otherwise the same as yours, that word was already eliminated for me.
Just goes to show that there is scant difference between our starting words. ![]()

A surprise deuce!
There were at least 15 legit words available. Just fishing for consonants and there it was!
A 3 today for me.

ACTOR → Not a bad start. I’d like to get an E in play, but trying N & S is too tempting here
STAIN → Hit on the N. -ANT ending? Seems a trap, but I’ll jump in with both feet
PLANT → Here I am… but there’s not too much left. QUANT would work but seems a little slangy. But if I put an E in there…
MEANT
Turned out I had exhausted most of the trap possibilities, according to Scoredle.

I knew Meant was probably a more likely word, but I decided to take a chance on Beaut - just seemed a Wordle-like word that they’d go with. But it just wasn’t meant to be.

MEANT → OK, good start. Perhaps an O, and a couple more comcons to round it out
SNORE → Picked up the R. But nothing placed yet. Try a repeat? No, something with L & I works
LINER → But was useless. PRUNE is out, so I don’t think we have anything with a U, but it’s time for that repeat letter, and I see…
PREEN → Missed it by that much
GREEN
If there was a fruit called a GRUNE, I might have seen the solution on my fourth guess…

After 2, saw Diner, Finer, Under, Infer, and Renew that had already been solutions, and saw Miner, Inner, Inker (iffy), Never, Newer, Nervy, Green, Preen, Ripen, and Riven, which hadn’t. Missed seeing Reign, Rerun, and Nerdy, none of which have been used.
My backup third word, GIMPY, seemed to narrow down the possibilities better than any of the possible solutions I saw. So I went with it on 3, and it clinched the 4 for me.
