After 2 I saw and almost played annoy. Typed it in and everything, but just before hitting enter I realized it didn’t have an L. That sure would have been annoying. Once I realized it probably ended in nal, final was obvious.

Another good second word! I wanted to try the A, as well as put the L at the end. I saw TIDAL right away, but had I looked at F first, I might have scored the deuce.
That’s OK, a birdie is always welcome.
I’m on a bit of a three roll lately.

Could’ve been less everyday words ANNUL, ANNAL, or ZONAL as well.

STONY → If it weren’t for the N I’d have no luck at all. Ah, well, I’ll get a good crack at two more comcons paired with two good vowels - what’s not to love?
LEARN → Three letters, evenly spaced, all unplaced. Doesn’t bode well. Try them all at the end for ??NAL. Need to try I or U. With the former I can see

CANAL/BANAL, ANNAL/ANNUL, NAVAL/ANVIL were all still out there, so I’ll check this one up to a high luck score. Though, out of those, only the last is something I’d have gone for on the third guess normally, so at least part of it is skill-ish.
Almost felt like a ripoff.

Not entirely luck but mostly luck, because I just wanted to see where those 2 vowels were placed. Luck because I chose that word out of 57 possibles.

Hiding my comment to reduce clutter…
Well, it does stand to reason having more words you can cross off the list, the better, however, I don’t recall the previous answers helping more so in the past 100 games…I have been able to rule out some words, but not so much that I know the exact answer - at least not for the majority of the puzzles since the used word list has gotten longer.
I’d say on average, the previous answers maybe rule out about 3-4 words, sometimes less, sometimes a little more, but it of course depends on how many choices you are facing as to how much that helps. It seems more times than not, I still have several words left to choose from, so it doesn’t necessarily guarantee a low score. The 2’s I get are usually just luck…a lot of them only had 1-2 choices and previous answers didn’t help.
As far as my average score getting better…it has improved since around June 2023 - that’s when I started going with the same start words consistently instead of randomly putting up different start words. I used to get more 4’s than 3’s, but since June I now get more 3’s than 4’s. I really attribute that to my start words mostly, though they don’t always help me if it’s a low-use letter word, or a trap word, but that’s when the sleuth words can really help, which I do toss up if necessary.
In any case, it will be interesting to see how things go as that used word list keeps growing longer. As things are now, there still are a lot of words left for answers. When it gets pared down too much, they’ll probably start repeating words, but at what point they decide to do that, who knows.
