Well, that was a surprise! Instead of going with my usual Choir, I decided to try and place the letters that hit with Slate. I really did not expect that to be THE word out of all the choices there were.

This one took me forever. And a dumb 2nd guess didn’t help. If I’d been paying attention, I would have seen that the L couldn’t be in that position.

Ones like this make me think I need a better system than randomly guessing common letters. I was absolutely convinced that I was failing this one. There were just too many options. If STONY was wrong I still saw STOOD and STOUT.
CABLE → Whiff. What’s my best second word from here?
ROIST → Good one. I like that STO start, then can I fit a U in? No. But I can check the N and Y with
STONY
Actually, I could have tried the U with STOUT, but that would have been a repeat letter on the third guess, which I tend to avoid. Scoredle shows 32 possibies for that guess, 5 of which were non-bogus and non-plural, so it could have gotten rather ugly. Chalk it up to good luck.

A T between the S and the N, and you’re not going to have 4 consonants in a row, so that really narrowed down the possibilities for the first 4 letters. It helped muchly that STING, STINK, and STONE had already been used, leaving STONY, STUNG, STUNK, and possibly STENO. Liked STONY better than STUN(G/K) and was willing to chance a 4 to have the best shot at the 2.

Never did get around to posting my stats for my first 700 Wordles (my #700 was Wordle 922). Anyhow, here they are:
2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | L | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1-200 | 5 | 47 | 99 | 39 | 16 | 0 | 802 | 4.01 |
201-500 | 16 | 126 | 126 | 27 | 3 | 2 | 1081 | 3.603 |
501-600 | 4 | 48 | 37 | 8 | 3 | 0 | 358 | 3.58 |
601-700 | 9 | 62 | 26 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 323 | 3.23 |
That bit of cut-and-pasting from Excel worked way better than I thought it would!
I’ve factored in my two losses as 7s.
According to my post on my 200th Wordle (Wordle 422), I averaged 4.17 for my first 100 games (most of which I was still using ADIEU as my starting word; switching to SLANT made a big improvement almost immediately) and 3.85 for my second 100. After that I was pretty steadily averaging about 3.60 for the next ~400 games; I’ve broken out the sixth 100 just to show there was no major improvement during that time.
And then during the seventh 100 games, my scores get a LOT better. And it doesn’t seem to be just me; Aspenglow noted several weeks ago that we all seemed to be doing a lot better. And AFAICT, Aspenglow is right about that: as a group, we sure seem to be getting a lot more 3s than we used to. Makes me wonder what’s going on - seems hard to believe that we’d all hit our stride in this game at the same time.
Are the words getting easier? It does seem like if I’m choosing between several possibilities, the solution is usually the most obvious one, even if there are several perfectly valid solutions. Is the exclusion of so many past solutions making the game easier, at least for those of us who keep track? (Sure it is, but that much easier?) I don’t know.
I’m certainly not complaining, but I can’t help but wonder.

I breathed a huge sigh of relief when the last 2 letters turned green, because there were so many other possibilities.
And @Aspenglow the bot was rude to me too, 76 for skill. I admit that I was lucky, but I didn’t think I was that unskillful.
I think it’s the past solutions. I note that both of us massively improved to around 3.2 average these past 100 games. Granted we use almost the same starting word, but still. A 3.2 average with all 2000+ possible answers still in play just doesn’t seem possible.
It’ll be interesting to see how it shakes out in another 95 or so days. Though I can’t imagine maintaining a 3.2 average, especially with how poorly this hundred games has started for me. Assuming my average for this hundred goes back up to 3.5 or 3.6, that would indicate that it wasn’t because of the previous answers list, but instead was just a particularly easy stretch of games.
I and we as a group sure did get a lot of 2s during that hundred games.
