WordleBot was an asshole, though. It told me that after my second guess, there was only one word left (the answer). Yet it gave me only an 84 for skill. Below the NYT average of 87. Peevish.
CLEFT → Not the letter I would have expected. Let’s load up on vowels, and while I’d usually go for two comcons here, I’d rather check up on one fairly common letter that often goes with the C
ROACH → Nope, no H. But that RO was great! C is rarely at the end, so I’ll try it second. I’d like to try another vowel, but I see a word with two comcons I can try
SCORN → Neither comcon hit, but now that I’ve placed the R, I have only two options for the O. Not many words end in -RC, so O?CR? or ??CRO, the second could be
MICRO
Yes, it’s a prefix, but it’s used a lot as a standalone word these days also. It’s much better than the only other word that Scoredle had for my final guess.

I’m with the “It’s a prefix” crowd.
I had to step away after three, and came back hours later with fresh eyes. When I finally saw MICRO, I thought, “Nah, that can’t be it, it’s not a word.”
I’d have thought the same thing, except for past solutions like HYPER and ULTRA. I agree that prefixes aren’t real words and shouldn’t be solutions, but Wardle and the NYT make the rules and clearly disagree.
What, you two never refer to stuff “at the micro level” as opposed to the macro level?
As a verbal shorthand on occasion, but that’s about it. Writing? Nope. Might say ‘at the local level’ or ‘at the molecular level’ if talking about politics or biochemistry. There’s usually a field-appropriate word.
Well, maybe not any more…

Well this would have been quicker without the previous words list. After 2 I thought drive? Nope. Bride? Nope. Bribe? Nope. Grime? Nope. Uh…
So then I started looking for vowels in position 2 and finally saw merge. As soon as I saw it wasn’t a previous answer I guessed it immediately. So close!

I really wasn’t expecting a hit with my 3rd guess. After 2, I came up with 15 possible solutions, 9 of which had already been used, leaving 6 known possibilities. I chose the word I did on 3 because if it wasn’t the solution, it would tell me which of the other five it was - assuming, of course, I hadn’t missed anything. (Which I had missed a few, actually, but only a few. I really did pretty well at that stage.) So a good combination of luck and skill for the 3.
