STERN — a good start leaves possible answers as stake state stave stoke stove strep; other possibles but already used are stage stale stole style
STATE — a good guess!

I should never play before settling down with a cup of coffee and drinking half of it. I forgot to check the used words list. If I had, I’d have known that PLATE was already used and would have made SKATE my second try. So it goes.
