ABIDE → Better try another vowel… and three comcons, seeing as how I knocked out zero with the start word. ROIST would normally be my goto here, but I know the I isn’t in the middle, so I’ll shuffle up the letters and try
RIOTS → and this is where I stopped for a while, including sleeping on it. A lot of words I’d normally try here end in T (e.g. BIGOT, PIVOT) or R (VIGOR etc.). I tried a bunch of non-words here, including some proper nouns (NIMOY, anyone? Had to try it) and tried one word that I thought would get the same treatment, but also KOed a couple more comcons and got

Had three possibilities after 3: SHA(D,P,V)E, so equal chances of getting a 3,4, or 5. So I chickened out on 3 and went with the sleuth word for a guaranteed 4. I hate getting 5s, and I’ve gotten too many of them recently.

LINGO → Well, that’s gotta be disappointing for the big Russian. On the plus side, this makes my next choice pretty easy…
TEARS → E’s gotta go last. S? Probably first. S?A?E, I’m seeing SHA?E, SHAME, SHAKE, SHADE, SHAPE, oh, or SPA[CDK]E. This could well go six. Try one of the first four and go to SP- if the H comes up empty…

That wa a pretty lucky guess. If I had thought about it a bit more I might have tried SHAPE to make the P more obvious, which I think would have been a better play, especially with Scoredle reminding me now about PHASE and CHASE.
