We cook with that spice a lot, so it came to mind quickly. Also, according to Scoredle, the first two guesses knocked the possibilities down to just a couple of words anyway, and CYNIC had been used.
When my default starting word gets no letters, I have a default second word. Looks like it is time to find a new second attempt.

OUTER → One vowel, placed; two comcons down, two more vowels down. So why doesn’t that feel like a good start? Maybe because that second U really begs for an initial Q… oh, but I can check two more vowels along with it, and a comcon. Nice.
QUAIL → And a second vowel, placed… but what consonants can I use? I tried PUNIC here but (rightly) got flushed. I do see one word that would be better for Valentine’s Day, but I’ll give it a try
