This took a while.
I saw QUASI very quickly, but refused to believe it could be the solution, and didn’t figure it would help me much if it wasn’t.
So I kept looking… and looking… for something else. Finally I saw it, but still hesitated before doubling up on two letters I’d already placed.
The word I didn’t see was ABASE. The first A would have gotten me there, and I wouldn’t have been mad about a four. Quite happy for a three today!

CUMIN → Picking up a less-common consonant early is always nice, right? OK, so now that that turd is polished, let me try a good second word
STEAM → Not bad. Really need to place some letters. R is still out there, so
HARMS → Good placement on the S. And I’ve almost exhausted the M. I see one word that would place both A & M, but I would have to double up on the S as well… Fourth guess, I’ll give it a shot.

Scoredle says there were seven words left, but six of 'em were bogus. I was a little surprised when everything started coming up green - I thought I was going on a position hunt for a solution in five.

So where’s the S? With it in the second position, I could only find the already-used USAGE. In the fourth slot, ABASE had already been used, and I could only find AMASS and UKASE. I thought the latter was the sort of word a NYT editor would know and maybe even use once in a rare while, but us mere mortals almost never see, so it was an easy choice.

All day long I could only see quasi, but really didn’t want to play it. Finally, with midnight approaching I had to just try. Before the letters had even finished turning over I saw awash and was mad at myself for not seeing it 5 seconds earlier. Then even that wasn’t the answer. Just terrible all around. The double double gets me good.
