Just to add to my prior note, I play without the prior word list.

PLANT
GLARE
BLARE
Should’ve trusted the B, but unfortunately my rule is to go with G before B if both are options. And actually F before either of them, but flare has already been an answer.

SHAPE → Oh no. This is like the mother of all traps. Let’s see, lots of Ls and Rs in the second slot in the set of possibles, but I’m not seeing a word that could cover both. Throw in a T & a C to try
TRACE → R. Must be 4th letter. Then, could try an L in second slot - hey, that would have covered both if I had thought of it. I’ll trust the B and try
BLARE
I’m going to put that one down as an odd mix of incredibly lucky that I got through the trap and finished with a birdie, along with unlucky that I ddin’t see the final answer and try it as it exercised both letters I wanted. But if I had, I might have seen the F or G words first, so still going with lucky today.

Quick and easy birdie. Not sure why I jumped right on BLARE instead of FLARE or GLARE, but I’m glad I didn’t think about it harder than I did.

SLANT
BRIDE
BLARE
After 1, I came up with a list of 22 possibilities, 9 of which turned out to have been used, leaving me 13. BRIDE was the best sleuth word I could come up with, and it did the job here. It wouldn’t have distinguished between CLAMP, CLACK, FLAKY, or ALACK, but CLACK on 3 would have given me a 3 or 4 if one of them had been the solution.

BLARE
Silly me. Once I had established xxARE, I looked for a sleuth word to eliminate FLARE, BLARE and AWARE. Totally didn’t think to add GLARE to that list, until I tried AWFUL (BEFOG would have done nicely). I deserved that disappointing five.
