"Wordle," a strangely compelling word game (Part 2)

GAUNT

Yet another trap. After three I was left with DAUNT, GAUNT, JAUNT, TAUNT and VAUNT. I needed a sleuth word to make sure to narrow it down.

Really glad I went with BRING for a sleuth…I had a few different ones in mind for the list of 9 words I was seeing. Turned out to be a good choice.

BLARE → Slow start. The three more WoFcons and one vowel to add to the A… tried to think of a word with O, but decided on I instead
SATIN → So that wasn’t bad. Try to place the N & T, then try an O this time, so go with
TANGO → NAGHT is not a word, so I think the N needs to go 4th, which puts the T last and the G first, so GA?NT must be
GAUNT

From my start-word-o’-the-day, Scoredle finishes in five, falling into the [DGHJTV]AUNT trap on 3 and getting fairly lucky in a 1-in-3 loss situation. So my third guess was a rather lucky one, as it killed the trap before it could be sprung.

SLANT
THIGH
GAUNT

A multi-trap! Days like this are why I don’t play hard mode.

After 1, Scoredle says I have 21 words, and ten of them were real. In one trap, (F/P/T)AINT; in the other, (D/G/H/J/T/V)AUNT; and AGENT off to the side. Fortunately, AGENT, JAUNT, and TAUNT had been used (and they’re not going to TAUNT us a second time until they start re-using past solutions), so it was now the full first trap, and the second reduced to D/G/H/V.

I came up with the recently-used THIGH as a sleuth word, with the I determining which trap I was in, and the T,H,G nailing or eliminating TAINT, HAUNT, and GAUNT. I got lucky with the G, but the worst case would have been a 4.

PATIO
HAUNT
GYVED
GAUNT

After an inauspicious beginning, HAUNT was a bit of good luck. Unfortunately, there were still three possibles. Fortunately, there was a sleuth word that tested all three (although two would have been sufficient). A 5 was okay by me.
ETA: TINGS??!!?? The bot guessed TINGS??? That’s not a word, that’s onomatopoeia! Pluralized, no less! I call shenanigans! :rage:

PAINT - Uh-oh: pretty much has to be an “au” combo which means. . .
HAUNT - …a trap!
GAUNT - Got very lucky on this one.

TIP: Apparently, the bot doesn’t consider DAUNT a viable word choice. The caveat to that is that I have seen the bot strike out once.

LEAST
HAUNT
GAUNT

I thought HAUNT was more Wordle-worthy than GAUNT. Hmmph.

From now on, it is!

:+1:

Hmmm…Scoredle’s OK with it, so it must at least have been on the original list of 14,855 words that one can use as guesses. ETA: And I can’t see why it wouldn’t be a valid solution. If it had come to that, I’d have chosen it ahead of VAUNT.

Both of those words as answers annoy me to no end because they’re essentially never used in their five letter form. Octordle was a big fan of daunt as an answer and it pissed me off every time.

I would feel the same about plussed and whelm. They aren’t really words in their own right anymore.

Now those two, I’m in complete agreement with you about. Same with vaunt, because ‘vaunted’ is the only way you ever see it.

‘Daunt’ bothers me less because while it’s almost never used straight up, it’s not locked into a single use. With dauntless, daunting, undaunted, etc., you don’t as much lose sight of the underlying word as a word of its own. At least I don’t, anyway; YMMV and probably does.

A sleuth word would have been much smarter at three, but I forgot to play this morning and my brain was a little mushy after a rough work day.
I’ll take it!
