REFER → A word full of Rs & Es and I get a hit with the F? Strange things are afoot on today’s puzzle. At least, I got a rarer consonant off the bat. Is it at the start?
FOALS → Nope. But a placed A and an S are nothing to sneeze at. Hmmm, S?AF?, SNAFU? Or, if I double up on the F, Scoredle-style, it could be
STAFF → But it wasn’t. It is, however,

Damn right! Scoredle also finishes in four, and doubles up on consonants on each intermediate step. I prefer my second guess, but it saves with a great chip shot for a tap-in, so honors shared on this one.

SNORE → At least I got the E. While reviewing this, I realized I should have gone for SLEEP here, but In the event I came close with
SPELL → But that looks like a bit of a trap. So now I tried to double up the E
SPEED → and failed miserably. Casting around for consonant pairs, I saw

My late ephiphany on my third guess cost me a par. At least the trappish situation wasn’t as bad as it could have been.
