"Wordle," a strangely compelling word game (Part 2)

I feel like I cracked a code here. Several times lately (five times this year before today, it turns out) I’ve gotten blanked with SLANT, then just yellow RE from CHORE. Just enough info to be frustrating, not enough to narrow down a search. And happening just often enough to get under my skin.

So today I dug up all the previous times where this had happened (only a dozen of them), and saw which letters (besides R and E, of course) appeared most often. And found a good sleuth word for my third guess that included those letters and also tried new locations for my yellows from 2. So now I know what to do on 3 when this happens again.

NERDY → I was really hoping for DINER today. Still, two letters, one placed is not a bad thing. Try the R before the E?
REALS → Urk. That makes a trap. Should have thought about that before placing it. Still T left out of the WoFcons, so I’ll give it a try
RETCH → Nope. Perhaps an O?
REVOW → No. Two guesses left. We (U & I) are still out there. But it might be more likely to have a second E. In which case, maybe a second R… RERE?, RE?RE, RE?ER… ah

REARM is Scoredle’s second guess, and making that effort to place the R pays off, as it finishes in three. Floundering to a five looks pretty bad in comparison, but in the moment I was happy to finish at all.

Another example of having to use a third research word before guessing for the answer. Fried has already been an answer, but it became my go-to third word previously in this situation.

Actually, now that I look at it, I think fried beats broiled fired because the R is more likely to be in the second spot rather than the middle, and the I is more likely to be in the middle slot than the second. It isn’t a huge difference, but it does slightly increase the likelihood of getting greens rather than yellows.
