CHASE
SCALE
My first thought was “Oh boy! Another xxAxE trap!” But then I picked CHASE, and it suddenly became an easy choice between SCALE and SCAPE.
FLAKE → Hmmm. That L pretty much has to go between A & E. And I know of no words that are ?xALE where x is a vowel. In fact, the only words I’m seeing are S?ALE - STALE, SHALE, SCALE, SWALE, which is a nice little trap. But I think we’ve had STALE before, and SWALE is a bit uncommon, so I’ll flip a coin and try
SCALE
Lucky guess on my part - I didn’t see WHALE, LEASE or LEAVE. Scoredle does, though, and ends up with a better-played four.

Man, I thought this one was gonna be easy after the first word with all the revealed letters.
I shouldn’t have tried SLAVE. Wordle wouldnt have used that one.

After a fortunate second word, I won the coin toss between SHALE and SCALE. Fun one today!

Saw LOVER and LOWER right away, but LOVER had already been used. When looking for other words that could fit the letters I had after 2, I came up with a few proper nouns (LEROY, ROLEX, BOREL (Borel sets, Heine-Borel theorem, strictly math-geek territory)) but no common nouns, so LOWER it was. Scoredle also had OILER as in a former Houston NFL team; kinda borderline IMHO.

I saw I could be in a trap right away, so I eliminated superfluous vowels first. Things still looked dicey, but MOWER would also eliminate the W. Once I hit that pay dirt, it was time for a sleuth word, and I was happy to take the L FTW!
(Didja see what I did there?)
We usually use “oll tanker” these days, but OILER as a ship which carries crude or fuel oil from place to place is valid usage, particularly in the naval context of a ship equipped to do underway replenishment (UNREP).
SCALE → OK, not bad. I’d like to try an O and two more WoFcons. Swap known letters for an -EL ending? Not seeing too many possibilities. Or even if we break them up, or move them elsewhere. Finally ended analysis paralysis by going with
FELON → which worked out pretty well - I got that O, anyway. Couldn’t find a way to try both R and T, but settled on the first with
LOVER → LORER? LOPER? LONER & LOSER are out. LOXER would be cool (someone who enjoys their bagel with smoked salmon) but probably not Wordle approved. Eventually settled on
LOWER
Scoredle takes a side trip through LEVEL to place E & L, and ends up with a five. It could have been a tough trap but I had fortunately guessed two of the possible fills already.
