There were only a dozen possible solutions after 1, and AGAIN, CHAIN, DRAIN, and YEARN had already been used, leaving BRAIN, GRAIN, BRAWN, DRAWN, PRAWN, KNACK, KNAVE, and (iffy) UNARM. (I’m pleased that YEARN was the only one I didn’t see as I was working on it.) BRAWN didn’t distinguish between KNACK and KNAVE or between DRAWN and PRAWN, so there were a couple ways I could get a 4, but otherwise I’d get a 3. Turned out that the solution was one of the ways to get a 4. That’s life.
STOUT had already been used. Went with CHOIR instead of my usual CHORE at 2 because I was seeing a lot of i’s and not many e’s in the possible solutions I saw after 1.
Been a while since I scored a deuce - and a nice symmetrical one at that!
I saw CROUP first and didn’t like it; then I saw SPOUT and just went with it.
There was also GROUP, PROUD, PIOUS, and OPIUM, so I’ll cop to a bit of luck. I was due!
Alas, missed a day. And, worse, didn’t realize it before I started today’s, so I’m off my usual start.

FLUNK → Hmm, hmm. FLOUT is out, but I kinda like an OU pairing, and I see one with a WoFcon, so
GROUP → My instincts were right! (i.e. I was lucky) Not PROU? or PLOU?, so must be ?POU?, and with two WoFcons left I’ll have to try SPOUT
That just all kind of fell into place. I thought my second guess was bad initially, but the one letter it revealed turned out to be key for the birdie. Pretty lucky on the whole.
